PLANO YOUTH LEADERSHIP
Plano Youth Leadership (PYL) is now accepting applications for its 2019-2020 class (Class 25). Students currently enrolled in the 9th grade and planning to enter the 10th grade during the 2019-2020 school year are eligible to apply. Applicants must reside in the area served by the Plano Independent School District (PISD) or within the City of Plano, regardless of whether the applicant attends public or private school or is home schooled.
PYL provides students with an opportunity to explore leadership and learn more about becoming effective leaders, working with different leadership styles, and increasing awareness of the Plano community, all in order to help prepare them to make positive impacts on their community today and in the future. Through a series of monthly class sessions during the school year, students develop the confidence and knowledge they need to succeed in leadership positions while learning about local leadership and service opportunities.
According to Monica Shortino, former PYL Board President, "Plano Youth Leadership is a unique opportunity for tenth-grade students to develop critical leadership skills while building comprehensive knowledge of the community they live. The program’s experience allows students to learn first-hand from community leaders representing government, education, community service and business to get involved in making our community even stronger.” Cole Shockey, a PYL alumnus and current Student Advisor, adds, “PYL was an amazing experience. The program helped me discover my potential as a leader, allowed me to develop skills that made an immediate and lasting impact, and inspired me to expand my vision of the future.”
The PYL Selection Committee chooses participants representing a cross section of the community based on information provided in the written application. Completed applications must be submitted by April 15, 2019. Applications are available on the Plano Youth Leadership website: planoyouthleadership.org.
Tuition for the program is $175 per participant, and need-based scholarships are available for qualified students.

FIRST YEARS
Eco-Learning Fair this past Monday helped launch Project Sustain, which is our final project of the year. On Tuesday, LCA Film Festival was held on campus and all 30 teams competed for in their prospective categories: documentary, animation or narrative. It was great to see all the families come out in support of their 1st Year Titans. The winners are:
Animation- Team 31- London, Discovering the Truth
Narrative- Team 11- New York, New York
Narrative- Team 55- 1929
Documentary- Team 12- The Wilds of Argentina
SECOND YEARS
The Academy’s 3rd annual Acadecon was a huge success! Five guilds presented different games in their own unique way. Booths were designed to be a fully immersive experience, showcasing the stages of production and development from start to finish, and learners did not disappoint. Learners displayed ideations and iterations of character models, early plans, diagrams, core loops and ready-to-demo games for their community audience. Community members and Titan parents came out to support and celebrate the progress of our Second Year learners over the last couple months.
As we launch into Project Y and the last Second Year project of the year, excitement and energy are at peak levels. Project Y asks learners to come up with new solutions to old problems. Historically, there have always been several groups that come up with some really interesting innovations, and the facilitators are all looking forward to the fresh ideas which have been pitched. What will be this year’s “bowl buddy”?
FOURTH YEARS
This week learners finished their capstone papers, juggled their class work, and filmed for their Mars Attacks video. In Government, learners worked on creating their colonial constitution. The structure in which these constitutions are written mimics that of the U.S. Constitution, though the form of government created was often much differen. In English, learners wrapped up their Collaborative Interview, a process that engaged learners in developing effective habits for close reading and group collaboration. This week they responded to a peer’s post and raised additional points of connection and questions from the text. In response to the feedback both produced and received, groups worked to reach consensus on final representative questions they would ask of the author. In Comp Sci this week, students learned about class-based vs classless network/host id assignment. They then learned about how to create subnetworks to make larger networks more scalable. In SRD this week, learners submitted their Final Research paper for the Capstone Projects. Learners completed a major milestone as they wrap up the written sections of the project. Learners will start preparing for the final Oral Presentation phase in the upcoming weeks.
The website below indicates the Capstone Presentation Dates and Times. Please sign up to view your child’s final presentation.
