Mrs. Walters' News
Dear Bushnell Elementary Families,
Happy 100th Day of School! Our students had a great time celebrating together will all kinds of activities including photos of themselves at 100, what they would do with $100, sharing collections of 100 items, showing off their homemade t-shirts, and parading around with homemade hats!
Are you interested in serving on our PTO team? We share our PTO with Cherry creek. Thank you to those who have helped us in the past and who started the year off with a bang. If working on special projects like conference meals, teacher appreciation week and beginning of the year treats for students and staff sounds like fun- please email me when you have a moment! February is a wonderful month! Not only do we have Valentine's Day, we also celebrate Black History Month! A wise man, Dr. Martin Luther King jr. once said "We are not makers of history. We are made by history." During this month, as well as throughout the year, our students learn about and celebrate those individuals who paved a foundation for all of us to build upon. During our Second Step lessons throughout the year, our students learn about positive problem solving, the power of words and kindness, and how to bring about positive change when interacting with others.
Black history month started as a week in 1926 and formalized in 1976 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson- a researcher and professor who was the Dean at Howard University and also the 2nd African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He chose the second week in February to honor Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln- both of whom had birthdays during the month of February. At Bushnell, we celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the year by demonstrating respectful, responsible and safe behavior and learning about what makes us more alike than different. While we certainly highlight Black History Month and the important contributions made from so many, we also recognize that this type of awareness and education requires a year long effort!
Our Valentine's Parties will occur on Monday, February 14th in the classrooms. Unfortunately, we are still required to limit visitors inside the building and will be having parties with students only.
Need to drop something off for your child? We've set up a table in the foyer for anything you might need to give to your student. There are slips and tape to let us know your child's name and teacher. This space will be checked frequently to ensure the items get where they need to be!
Attention families with incoming kindergarteners!!! Kindergarten enrollment for next fall will open on Monday, February 14th! If you have a student who will turn 5 by September 1st 2022, they can start their school journey! You may also sign a waiver for your child to start school if they turn 5 by December 1st 2022. Paper work required includes proof of residency, original birth certificate, up to date immunizations and a health appraisal. Information can be found on our Lowell Area Schools website here.
Parent/Teacher conferences are right around the corner! Given our current pandemic circumstances, we are planning for virtual or phone conferences only at this time. Mark your calendars for the week of February 7th. We do understand that in person conferences are usually the preferred way to communicate and I am hopeful we will return to that method next school year.
Are you interested in subbing at Bushnell? See below for the links to get started! Our sub staffing is slim and your help would be appreciated!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Erin Walters
