PYP ART- Ms. Buchbinder
This quarter we have started the year creating two collaborative art projects: our essential agreements and the bulletin board. The students worked together on both projects to build community. The essential agreements are what the students decided they want to do as a class in order to have the best learning space possible in the art studio. Students used paint and their handprints to sign the agreements. In our next project, which kicked off our How We Express Ourselves Unit, all Kindergarten through 4th grade students learned about color values, tints, shades, shape and patterns. They each painted one piece of paper using tints and shades of a color and then created a feather that they decorated with their own unique pattern. When we put all of the feathers together we not only created a set of beautiful wings, but also an interactive art space where students can transform themselves!
The continuation of the How We Express ourselves unit is creating a self portrait for the beginning of the year. I’m excited to see what each chooses to express about themselves in each portrait. They will also get a chance to reflect on how far they have come with drawing and creating self portraits!
PYP SPANISH - Ms. Sandoval
It has been an exciting quarter for Spanish PYP. Students in 3rd and 4th grade worked in a Hispanic Heritage unit. They explored and learned about Hispanic people including Ellen Ochoa, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Roberto Clemente, Cesar Chavez, Sonia Sotomayor and others. They designed posters and made personification of the characters.
Students in Kindergarten through 2nd reviewed previous learned concepts such as greetings, colors, numbers, autumn related words and phrases. These concepts were taught through different activities that included songs, games and conversational presentations.
Furthermore, by the end of the quarter, all students Kindergarten through 4th grade worked in a unit about Dia de los Muertos where they learned about this cultural celebration integrating vocabulary as well as hands-on activities such as skeletons labeled with Spanish vocabulary, skulls, papel picado, ofrendas, etc.
PYP Physical Education- Mr. Carbajal
This year we have been off to a great start! Kindergarten is learning basic locomotor skills and incorporating them into races and games. K-2nd has also been working on catching and throwing a ball. Students have learned catching cues and learning to catch at different levels: low, medium, and high. Students have also been working on rolling, underhand, and overhand throws.
3rd and 4th grade have been assessing their fitness level using Fitness Gram. Students have done the pacer test, push-up test, and sit and reach test. Next, we will be working on the curl-up test and making S.M.A.R.T goals in order to improve our fitness levels.
PYP MUSIC- Ms. Thompson
We have started the year with gusto! Kindergarten and First grade are getting lots of singing and moving experience as we learn about opposites in music: high/low, fast/slow, loud/soft. In Second grade, students are putting rhythms together in simple ways using unconventional notation. Ukuleles have been the focus in Third grade so far and we will be expanding out to our barred instruments next to create and perform melodic patterns. Our Fourth grade students are playing the recorder and earning “belts” with Recorder Karate. In this program students earn a different colored “belt” for every song they learn and perform correctly. Next week, 3rd and 4th grade students will be walking to Senn High School to enjoy the Lyric Opera’s Opera in the Neighborhoods production of “Rhoda and the Fossil Hunt.” Looking ahead to next quarter, we will be preparing for our Winter Sing concert on Thursday, December 20 at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
MYP Spanish- MS. Lenihan
This quarter MYP year 1 students started the year by learning about how to talk about likes and dislikes. They also began their introduction to verb conjugation with the verbs ‘gustar’ and ‘ser’. By the end of the quarter we will be writing and speaking in full conversations!
MYP Year 2 students started diving into verb “rule breakers” or verbs that change spelling. We are also working on a unit on clothing and will work towards developing a scripted fashion show!
MYP Year 3 students have started working on speaking in the past tense. They will be working towards creating a nutrition and activity plan to demonstrate their knowledge of “La Salud” or health!
MYP Dance- Ms. Moritz
This quarter has brought about many “firsts” in the Peirce MYP dance world. Our day one 7th and 8th grade students began the year in collaboration with students from Loyola University Chicago. We created a public service announcement, encouraging the youth of today to exercise their right to vote in the November election. The final product went viral quickly, even making its way to the WTTW studios!
8th grade is currently learning how to create public service announcements using digital media. Using the concept of rhythm as a guide, 7th grade is finishing up the use of Flamenco footwork to create various footwork combinations to be presented in the winter concert. 6th grade is excitedly dancing through the decades, having begun with the 20s Charleston, ending with the music video dance generation of the 90s (Hammer Time!). And lastly, hip hop dance technique has been our sole focus of 5th grade, learning various dance steps through top rock, down rock, tutting, and house movements.
Stay tuned for our MYP dance performances to be featured in the Peirce Winter Concert on Thursday, December 20, 2018. We will have two classes performing at one time (2 classes in the am, 2 in the pm) - we will be announcing those details in the next couple of weeks!
