Dear Parents / Carers,

How can it be Friday again already? There has been so much going on in school this week.

Key stage 2 had a fabulous day on Wednesday as they enjoyed a singing workshop ending with a brilliant performance for Year 2 , governors and staff. They learnt how to watch a conductor carefully for clues and instructions, how to use rhythm to help with timing and a whole new song for us to sing in school. There was lots of clapping, dancing and singing and the final performance really showed off all they had learned. The sound of so many voices singing in harmony was just joyous!

Yesterday, 10 pupils from Y2 Rosen took part in our first sporting event of the year against other local schools. They enjoyed an afternoon of multisports and came back to school looking worn out so must have done well!

We also held our first Governing Body meeting of this school year. We currently have a vacancy for a parent governor and nomination forms will be going out next week for anyone who is interested in the role. The governors meet six times per year usually on a Thursday afternoon and there is also some time commitment in terms of meeting with staff and myself at other times during the school day throughout the year. Please feel free to come and ask about the role and I will put you in touch with the governors who can explain in more detail!

Finally, I have sent our updated Attendance Policy out to all parents today. This has been approved by our school governors and is part of a MAT wide Attendance Policy. Again, if you have any questions, please let me know.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Karen Williams

Message from Head Pupils

This week on Wednesday we had two musical experts in to teach us a new song which everyone enjoyed. The whole of key stage 2 tried their best and sang loud and proud. Everyone particularly enjoyed it when the teachers had to pick dance moves!

Overall, this was a very good week.

Head Pupil certificate went to Emie in Milligan class.

Y2 Multi Skills

A team of Y2 children had a great afternoon taking part in a multi-skills event with other STARMAT schools. They enjoyed improving their skills in aiming, balancing, sprinting and playing parachute games. Well done to Charlie, Erin, Huey, Jacob, Bea, Evelyn, Raven, Joe, Taryn and Finnbar.

Harvest Festival

We will be celebrating Harvest and thinking about thankfulness in school on 5th October with the worship that day led by our new Head Pupils and Year 6 Team captains. Although we don't have room to invite parents to the worship, we would be very grateful for any donations of tinned or dried goods which we then donate to the Selby Food Bank. They are particularly in need of tinned spaghetti, baked beans, tinned custard and rice pudding as well as tinned soups if you are able to help. Please bring items to school on 5th October and the food bank will collect them that day. Thank you.

Polar Preet School Logo Competition

As a school, we've been given an amazing opportunity to enter a competition. This competition is being held by Preet Chani, who became the first woman of colour to complete a solo trek across Antarctica in January this year. She is now training for phase two, which is to cross the length of Antarctica completely solo! She has asked schools to create a logo for her expedition. The rules for this competition are:

  • Create a logo no larger than A6 size to go onto the sled.
  • On the entry please write the name of the young person, the school, country and 100 words describing why this logo should go to Antarctica.
  • The winning logos will be decided by Preet, they will be printed as stickers and will be on her pulk for the duration of the expedition.
  • Individual applications will not be accepted. One entry per school or organisation only please.

We will be sending off 1 child's entry on Friday 30th. If you wish to enter, the children need to give their entry to Mr Symes, or to the office by the end of the school day, on Thursday 29th September.

Mr Symes has pre-made templates of the correct size, if you wish to use them. Please just ask at his door in the morning or after school.

Preet Chani will be announcing 7 or 8 winners on her expedition and this can be viewed on her social media accounts or through: www.polarpreet.com

In Preet's own words: “Nothing is impossible” I’ve always had this idea that I can achieve something great, something that allows me to be a role model. I want my 10 year old niece to grow up without boundaries, knowing the possibilities of what you can achieve in life are endless."

Good luck and we look forward to seeing some incredible entries.
