We Are A.R.M.Y. Strong!!

Each day, we say the Continental Creed: "As a member of the Continental Army, I promise to be Accountable, Respectful, Motivated to Learn, and do mY best." We also remind students of our school goal of achieving a letter grade of a B in three years or less....Students will hear us say "Are you helping us get to a B in 3?" If we all focus on being ARMY Strong every day, we will reach this goal!

PTSA Winter Formal This Friday!

The PTSA Winter Formal will be this Friday, Februray 5th from 6-8pm. This is a great opportunity for the students to get dressed up and enjoy some time together. Boys can wear dress pants, a dress shirt and are encouraged to wear a tie. Ladies can wear dresses or dress pants/skirts. Shoulders must be covered by sleeves or a sweater. All dresses or skirts must be at least finger tip length. Please contact Ms. Branson if you have any questions about the dress code. Also, if you need dresses or dress clothes, have your student see Mrs. Miller. This is one of our favorite events at WMS! The students take pride in dressing up and having a great time. There will be concessions and a photo booth to capture the moments.

Yearbook orders due Friday

Preserve your child's memories with a 2015-2016 yearbook! You know we all love to look back at our crazy hair styles, check out the bizarre fashion choices and search for that name your forgot! Send in $15 for your child's yearbook, so we can order for this year. We have a minimum number of orders required, so make sure to get them in. If we don't hit that number, we will not be able to have a yearbook, and all that laughter would be lost. If you have questions, you can contact Mrs. Whitecotton.

Acuity Assessments this week

Students will be taking their Acuity assessments this week in English and Math classes. This assessment is designed to tell us if students have the skills they need for the ISTEP+ assessment. We will be using this information to help fill in learning gaps for students prior to the end of the year.

Letter grade added to RDS Parent Access

We heard from many parents that the new grading system is hard to follow throughout the semester, so we've made some changes. We will continue to grade assessments on the 1, 2, 3 scale in order to adjust our instruction and support student learning. However, we have added the current letter grade on your child's RDS Access, so that it updates after each assessment. We hope this helps to communicate your child's progress throughout the quarter. Thank you for the feedback and for helping us improve our systems! Please contact Ms. Branson if you have additional suggestions for improvement.

Students rewarded with popsicles for no office referrals

On Friday, students were rewarded for not having an office referral in January. Mr. Merriwether and Mr. Gaffney reviewed the discipline data from last year and noticed that January has historically been a high referral month. In order to keep from repeating the same pattern, we started some behavior sheets for some students, announced our progress daily and rewarded those students who were doing the right thing. As a result, we cut our referrals by over half this month and avoided a similar pattern of increases! We're proud of our students for being accountable and holding each other accountable! We will continue with rewards for positive behavior each month of the year.

National School Counselor's Week

Please send a note of gratitude and thanks to Mrs. Bender this week. This is National School Counselor's Week, so let's take a minute to thank our school counselor for the work she does. Mrs. Bender meets with students who need to vent, work out problems, discuss friend concerns, or share family issues. She also does all of our scheduling, enrollment, and transition to high school. Mrs. Bender plans the Boot camp for our 5th graders each year and helps with all of our academic assemblies and 8th grade recognition. She's a huge part of our team! Let's let her know! Her email is carrie.bender@evsc.k12.in.us

Independent Audit very positive

We received our report from an independent audit recently. The report reflects visible signs that our student behavior and academics are improving. Our teachers and the students interviewed were very positive about the school and very clear on our mission. It was encouraging to hear that there are visible signs of the hard work of our teachers and students. I'm proud to be a Continental!

8th grade recognition scheduled for May 18th

All 8th grade students will want to get May 18th on the calendar! We will recognize the accomplishments of our 8th grade class during our 8th grade Recognition Ceremony at Boose High School's Auditorium at 8:30am. PTSA will host the 8th grade Block Party on the front lawn of WMS after the ceremony. Please be sure to let friends and family know the date and time for this event.

Doors open at 7:10

With the weather getting colder, please make sure you drop students off after 7:10am. We do not have teachers on duty until then, so please make sure students aren't standing out in the cold waiting for the doors to open.

Cold Weather Items

As the weather gets colder, please remind students to bring a solid color jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt. That means no logos, stripes, etc. It must be a solid color and not have a hood. Students may also wear a solid color long-sleeved t-shirt under their polo or colored shirt. Our classrooms do get chilly, so they will need to have something to throw on. If you need a cold weather item, please see Mrs. Miller. If you have extras or items you're cleaning out, please consider sending those to us for others.

Donate Uniform clothing

If you have uniform clothing your child has grown out of or know of others in the community with uniform clothing, please consider donating to Washington Middle School. We are in need of khakis and polos for emergency situations. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Base Exchange

Students are rewarded with points for displaying behaviors that are Accountable, Respectful, Motivated and showing they are Ready to learn. Students have the opportunity to spend those points for different items at the Base Exchange. Students will be able to order items from the base exchange by going to the Washington website (http://www.edlinesites.net/pages/EVSC_WashingtonMS) and using the Google form to submit their request. Please encourage you children to view the site.

New WMS Grading Policy

http://www.edlinesites.net/pages/EVSC_WashingtonMS/Departments___Programs/WMS_Grading_Policy

If you couldn't attend one of the eight parent meetings on our new grading policy last week, you can find the details of the new system at this link. At any time, you can calculate your child's grade in a class by dividing the number of 3's or 3+'s by the total number of assessments entered into the gradebook. Please know that students can apply to retake any assessments by working to learn the material and applying to the teacher. If you have additional questions, please contact Mr. Merriwether, Ms. Branson or Mrs. Shields.
