SMS Security Update

Have you noticed small black boxes at most SMS entrances? These are the access control mechanisms that are now fully operational on our campus. Staff members have key cards or key fobs that, when swiped, open a door. Each staff member has a unique card/fob that gives access to the building on certain days and times.

The access control plan also features a keypad at the west PE hallway entrance. This keypad will enable athletes (in season) to access the PE hall and gym area. Each team gets a unique code, that when used by an athlete or an athlete's parent will open the door on days and times associated with practice. Team codes are private and can only be shared with parents. Team codes expire at the end of the sport season.

We also added a new access control feature inside our building. All of our large, white, fire doors are now on access control. With the push of a button, they will simultaneously close and lock. This is helpful if there is a fire that needs to be contained, if we have a tornado drill and need additional protection, or if there is a disturbance that we want contained to a certain segment of the building. We are excited to have this new feature!!

If you have any questions about the access control program, contact Ms. Nass or Mr. Smith.
