Pastor Mary Beth's Musings
“... Tell me a story and I’m hooked. Tell me a story and I’ll never forget it. Tell me a story and I’ll carry it with me wherever I go, like a penny in a pocket, like a friend.” (Shauna Niequest, “Speak,” p. 13)
Yes, there’s something about a good story. Jesus knew it. He was a master storyteller and used the art of storytelling to communicate deep truths about God, humanity, love, and eternity to a culture on the brink. Think of all the times he said, “The kingdom of God is like ... (a father with two sons, a mustard seed, 10 bridesmaids, a man going on a trip).”
Stories surprise us. They reach out and grab us. And sometimes they invite us to look at the world, at others, maybe even our “enemies” in a whole new way. God can touch our lives through story. There are stories to tell here at Vista Ridge UMC of the ways that God is moving through people’s lives and through the work we are doing together and in our neighborhood. We’re going to make intentional space for those stories throughout the month of October, a month of Telling the Story.
Our youth will be leading worship on Sunday, October 4. They’ve already been working hard on music and testimony and preaching and are very excited about Telling the Story. On October 11, we’ll hear stories from the amazing and faithful work of our team that takes worship to Vista Ridge Nursing and Rehab and Arbor House every Sunday morning. October 18 is designated as Children’s Sabbath and our Kids Club is working on dance, skits, music and dance as they prepare to “take over” worship on that day. And our Music Ministry—choir, chimes, praise team—will lead worship on October 25, a Sunday that will be full of the diversity of music offerings at VRUMC.
I can’t wait to hear the stories of God’s movement in these ministries. And I wonder, what story do you have to tell? I’m praying for you. I hope you’re praying for me.
Glory to God!
