A Gentle Reminder
Math
We also began to dig into division before winter break, and we will continue to do so until the end of the quarter. There experience from 3rd grade has been a great foundation to build upon. We are focusing on larger division problems (489 / 4 or 6,934 /3) and strategies that we can use to help us solve the problems, mostly through word problems. As we begin to move into 3rd quarter we will start a new cluster of study with fractions.
English/Language Arts
We started off the new year with a brief review of idioms and cursive writing. We will now return to our Journeys series to review big concepts such as theme, main idea, and plot. We will then begin looking closely at poetry and myths. We will also take our midyear STAR assessments and NC Check Ins. These assessments will help me see how your child is progressing through the curriculum and make any adjustments in their instruction.
In writing, we will continue to focus on writing multi-paragraph pieces in both the narrative and expository domain. Our admire pieces were such a success, I feel confident students will take what they have learned to create strong, cohesive pieces with appropriate grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Science
In our next cluster of study: Minerals, Rocks and Soil, we are discovering and learning about the rock cycle, different categories of rocks and rocks that fall within each of those categories, learning about minerals, soil, erosion and so much more. This is a really fun hand on unit with a lot of interactive experiences.
