Principal's Update
Grizzly Parents, Guardians and Students –
We’re heading down the home stretch of a remarkable school year.
Last night, we got to celebrate our seniors with a socially distanced drive-through Cap and Gown Pick-Up and Library/Text Book drop-off. A few folks weren’t able to be there and can email Kelly Tygerson to arrange for item return or pick-up. A shout out to the teachers, staff and parents from Senior All Night who helped make the event special.
We have refined the schedule for grades 9, 10 and 11, as well as seniors completing dual credit or required classes.
Students have through May 29 to turn in completed work and earn credit.
Special Schedule the week of May 25:
- MONDAY 5/25/2020 NO SCHOOL HOLIDAY
- TUESDAY 5/26/2020 AM RED DAY AND PM RED ALTERNATE
- WEDNESDAY 5/27/2020 AM WHITE DAY AND PM OFFICE HOURS
- THURSDAY 5/28/2020 AM OFFICE HOURS AND PM WHITE ALTERNATE
- FRIDAY 5/29/2020 INDEPENDENT STUDY
Finals week is June 1 – 5. We will be scheduling make-up sessions, office hours and year-end connections in lieu of traditional finals. Dual credit classes may be an exception.
FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS PICK-UP/DROP OFF
A curbside locker item pick up, book return and tech return will be scheduled during the week of June 1. Deets soon!
Is your Grizzly in grade 9 10 11 having a hard time staying on track?
Email or call your school counselor for a range of issues. They care about your students and will listen to their needs. Contact info is towards the bottom of the Grizz-O-Gram.
CREDIT RECOVERY FOR INCOMPLETE (I) FINAL GRADES
Students who receive a Final Grade of Incomplete (I) will have a path for credit recovery that will keep them on track for graduation. But if your student can engage now, it is the very best way to prepare for next year’s learning.
Students with an incomplete (I) at the end of the term will have future options to earn credit. Your counselors will help you in formulation a Credit-Earning Assurance Plan (CEAP) that may include:
- Credit retrieval
- Summer classes or independent work
- Repeating a core class next year
- Online credit recovery options
- Or other strategies to progress towards the credits you will need for graduation.
More details on Credit-Earning Assurance Plans are forthcoming.
Check out our Distance Learning For All (DLFA) web page at
http://ashland.k12.or.us/ahs/dlfa for a consolidated place for updates.
Let us know how we can help.

School Events Update!
Graduation Car Parade - Friday, May 29th
On May 29th, AHS will hold a Graduation Car Parade in place of a Graduation Ceremony.
We have been working closely with Ashland Police Department & The City of Ashland to construct a plan that is both social distance safe and celebratory!
General Concept:
- Students will be divided into 3 groups that will depart around 4pm, 5pm, and 6pm. Students will be grouped up by elementary schools (if your student didn't attend an elementary school here, you will be placed in one of groups).
- Students will have the option to ride on a School Bus with maximum 10 other students if they choose not to be in a personal vehicle. More details to come.
- We ask that an adults drive any personal vehicle used for the parade.
- The Parade will begin at the Mountain Ave/Iowa St Parking Lot. Cars will be lead by APD to Wightman and proceed down Siskiyou Blvd to the Fire Station. From there, students will go to their elementary schools to drive through and see old teachers. This is a similar concept to our elementary school procession on Graduation Day.
We will be getting more information out to families next week as we finalize details of this event.

BE THE LIGHT CLASS OF 2020 #BeTheLightOR
Friends of Ashland School District,
We will be turning our stadium lights on Friday nights as a symbol of hope and support for all Ashland students.
We want all of our students to know how important they are to us and that we miss them. We love and care for each of them.
On Friday nights at 20:20 military time (8:20 p.m.) we will light up Walter A. Phillips Field on the AHS campus for 20 minutes. This will start tonight and continue each Friday through May 29th (the scheduled date for graduation). The scoreboard is turned on (see attached picture) and set to honor the class of 2020. This will stay on overnight.
This is modeled after the Be the Light Movement initiated in the Colorado. Click on the link below for more information. Madras High School started it in Oregon and now at least 100 high schools across our state have committed to doing some form of this.

AHS Senior College and Career Pathways Survey and Final Transcript Request
Due to our unprecedented circumstances, we know many AHS seniors are still unsure of their post high school plans. To get a better sense of the support our seniors may need in navigating their next steps, we have asked them to complete this short survey. If seniors are planning to attend a college, professional trade school or vocational program, we use this survey to determine where to send their final transcript. Thanks so much for encouraging all AHS seniors to complete this quick survey today:
AHS Senior College and Career Pathways Survey and Final Transcript Request
If a senior’s plan change (or they are still undecided), they can take this survey again at a later date or contact Jen Marsden (jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us) to provide an update.
Spring 2020 Updates: College and Career Pathways
As always, Jen Marsden, our College and Career Specialist, is available to help students explore educational and career pathways, and to assist in navigating the college admissions process. Many juniors and seniors have questions about how to proceed, especially in light of the uncertainties we are all facing. Rest assured that colleges are adjusting their admissions expectations for the Class of 2020 and 2021. Ms. Marsden is here to offer support to students (and their parents/guardians) as they explore post high school options, so please reach out to her with questions at jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us and check out the helpful resources for senior and juniors below!

Virtual College Exploration Week
During Virtual College Exploration Week April 20-23, juniors could choose from over 90 information sessions hosted by college admissions professionals from around the country (and world)! Strive Scan is extending their virtual college exploration through May 8th. Listed sessions cover general admissions topics to information on specific schools and majors. Students can explore the scheduled sessions and register for those that interest them. This a great resource for juniors (and sophomores) who would like more college information. Due to limited capacity, students are encouraged to register early.
ACT and SAT Updates
Juniors planning to apply to four year colleges usually take ACT/SAT tests in spring of junior year. Colleges know testing is not available this spring and many are adjusting their admissions requirements. Check Spring 2020 ACT Updates and Spring 2020 SAT Updates for current information about ACT /SAT testing, and check college websites for any changes in admissions guidelines.
For qualifying students who need a fee waiver, please contact Karyn Barats at karyn.barats@ashland.k12.or.us to request a waiver code.
