Reid Goldstein New School Board Chair

On July 1, 2022, the Arlington School Board held its annual organizational meeting for the 2022-23 school year and elected Reid Goldstein as Chair and Cristina Diaz-Torres as Vice-Chair. The new Chair and Vice-Chair terms begin immediately and will continue until June 30, 2023.

School Board Now Accepting Applications for School Board Advisory Councils for the 2022-23 School Year

The School Board Advisory Councils and Committees provide the School Board and administrators input and feedback on the instructional and support programs, facilities, and operations of the Arlington Public Schools. The School Board values input from parents and members of the community as part of the APS decision-making process on operations, teaching and learning, and student support. School Board Appoints Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources

Michael Hodge is a human resource (HR) professional with more than 15 years of diverse experience, which includes working for local government and school systems. He successfully held various positions such as HR specialist, generalist, supervisor, and senior leadership roles, as HR Manager and Deputy Director of HR Operations with the District of Columbia Government, and Director of HR Staffing for the Baltimore County Public Schools.

School Board Appoints Director of Talent Acquisition and Management

Paige Tucker has been appointed as the Director of Talent Acquisition and Management (Licensed Staffing) effective Sept. 1. Tucker brings over 20 years of experience in education in Virginia.

School Board Appoints Talent Acquisition Coordinator

Dr. Dimar Brown has been appointed as Talent Acquisition Coordinator, effective Aug. 15. Dr. Brown has over 13 years of experience in designing, implementing, and measuring education (college access), workforce development, and talent acquisition programs. His work in K-12 consulting and post-secondary administration has allowed him to convene and lead diverse cross-functional teams and projects.

The School Board appointed Dr. Darrell Sampson as Executive Director of Student Services. His appointment begins Sept. 1 Dr. Sampson has 22 years of experience in education and has worked as a leader to make connections between academic achievement, college and career readiness, and the wellbeing of students, staff, and families.

School Board Appoints Principal of Taylor Elementary

Katie Madigan has over 20 years of experience at both the elementary and middle school levels. She is an Arlington resident and parent. Madigan holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Kenyon College, an M.S. in Kinesiology from the University of New Hampshire, an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Marymount University, and an Ed.S. in Education Administration from the University of Virginia. She also has a gifted endorsement from the University of Virginia.

More Administrative Appointments

The School Board made administrative appointments at the July 19 School Board meeting. The board approved Kashina Saunders as the Supervisor, Employee Relations, effective August 15. They also appointed Raymond Franklin Jr. as the Senior Paralegal in the Division Council Office, effective August 1. They also appointed Elisabeth Lua as the Family and Consumer Engagement (FACE) Coordinator, effective August 1.

COVID-19: In-School Testing/Protocols for Students/Health and Safety Information

Aegis is providing weekly in-school COVID testing. Click on the link below to sign up for FREE testing:

APS has moved to a 5-day isolation period for students who test positive for COVID-19. Previously, isolation for students was for a period of 10 days. This change aligns with the recommendations of the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health. Students may return to in-person instruction on day six, if on day five the student has no symptoms (or symptoms are improving), AND has been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication, AND is able to wear a well-fitting mask for days 6-10. There are several ways to contact APS for help with your questions or to provide input. Who to call and how to engage depends on what you need.
- NEW Family Information Line (703-228-8000) – APS now has a central Family Information Line to assist families with questions concerning transportation, Virtual Learning Program, registration, Extended Day food services, technology, or general questions. This line is open on school days from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Transportation will take calls from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you call and are sent to voicemail, leave a message and someone will respond to you within 24 hours.
- Engage with remains the contact for providing input on current APS initiatives.
- Contact Your School – For specific school-based issues or concerns regarding students, families are encouraged to contact their child’s school directly so the issue can be quickly resolved.
