Sunday Shakedown
Weekly memo for Washington Elementary
Principal Post
I was recently reading a blurb on why breaks, such as the one we just completed, actually make us more productive:
Downtime replenishes the brain’s stores of attention and motivation, encourages productivity and creativity, and is essential to both achieve our highest levels of performance and simply form stable memories in everyday life. A wandering mind unsticks us in time so that we can learn from the past and plan for the future. Moments of respite may even be necessary to keep one’s moral compass in working order and maintain a sense of self.
May we all have enjoyed this opportunity to check out, check in with loved ones and find our sense of self.

Professional Musings
From RNR:
On behalf of the RNR Drama Team, I would like to extend an invitation for you to consider sending a grade level or two to our elementary school-based performance of The Little Mermaid. I’ve attached the flyer with more information to share with your staff. We are limited to around 925 seats, so we will only be able to accommodate on a first-come basis. When responding to Becky Hill, bhill@k12k.com, you will need to list the total number of students and adults from your school attending the performance. Also, we would like to ask the students (optional) to bring a canned food item to donate for our food drive. Transportation cost and arrangements will need to be handled by each individual school.
FROM the ASC:
I wanted to let you know that our annual United Way fundraising campaign will begin after break on Monday, October 17 and end Friday, October 28. Please think about how you can be a part of this year’s campaign. Once again this year, a variety of incentives will be available encouraging participation, including special drawings for those who become a Caring Gift donor, contributing in 26 incremental payments through payroll deductions over the course of one year. Making a small sacrifice makes this donation very doable!
· All employees who donate in any fashion will be allowed to wear jeans to work on Friday, Oct. 28.
· Drawings will be held on Monday, Oct. 24 and Monday, Oct. 31 for the following categories of donors:
o Early Bird donors (Oct. 24 drawing ONLY)
o 1st Time donors (both weeks)
o Loyal Contributors (both weeks) those who have given to the United Way for ten or more years
o Payroll Deduction donors (min. gift $26/year) (both weeks), those who have donated either their “Caring Gift” or at least $1/payday through payroll deduction
o United Way Supporters (Oct. 31 drawing ONLY), all those who have contributed to the 2016 United Way fundraising campaign
The United Way has provided a video clip to showcase this year’s campaign. To see the video, please click here. The United Way does great work in our community and they are excellent stewards of the money raised in each fundraising campaign. The United Way of Greater Kingsport has set a goal of $3.75 million for this year’s campaign and the Kingsport City Schools goal to help reach this amount is $30,000.
Please consider how you can give to the United Way. Working together, we can achieve the KCS goal and help United Way “Drive and Inspire Community Change.”
