Sharing Second Grade
A Peek at Our Week!
October 2, 2016
MATH:
2.1 - In our second math unit students will learn to represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction with, and without, regrouping. They will also learn mental strategies they can use to help them add and subtract fluently within 20. Please click here to view the parent letter for unit 2.
2.2 - Did your student tell you about Desktop Basketball? It was a fun way to work on compiling and comparing data. We wrapped up our first unit and I'm really proud of the students' hard work! Next week we'll review and then take the unit post-assessment.
3.1 - In our first math unit the students are developing and using an understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. In this unit we are also learning to fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students are also reading and solving problems using scaled pictographs.
READING:
We are excited to start a new reading unit this week! The students will be matched to a variety of nonfiction books to discover a new way to connect to reading. They will explore familiar and unfamiliar topics. They will learn to develop questions and notice details found in texts. They will also learn to read with a voice that matches the content and develop vocabulary usage and understanding.
WRITING:
Our new writing unit gives the students the opportunity to write A LOT of nonfiction books! They will learn to write with purpose as they consider the specific information their audience will need to know. They will also learn to make choices about how to shape their information and decide what kind of books to make.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are continuing a unit on geography. Students will use different sources to identify and describe the major topographical regions and rivers of Georgia.
Literacy Night!
Mark your calendars now! On Tuesday, October 3rd at 6 PM, we will hold our first CCE Literacy Night. This is a great opportunity for our parents to discover what their children are working on in reading and writing! Our second graders are creating trailers for their favorite books for you to preview at the 'ReadBox' kiosk!
Free Parent Workshop:
