NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
May 23, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Happy last day of school! Thank you for all of your support this year. NES would not be the wonderful school it is without you and all of your help. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers, the PTA, the SAC, and for all that you do for your children each and every day.
Thank you also to our amazing teachers. They come every day with a passion for learning that they love sharing with your children. Thank you for sharing your families with us!
It truly takes a village to raise successful, resilient, and kind kids. We are all so grateful to have the Nederland community as our village. Have a wonderful summer and enjoy all that our beautiful community has to offer!
Have a great weekend!

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Our NES Social Emotional Learning Team
Another big thank you to our Social Emotional Support Team at NES! Thank you to Ann Sherman, our SEL Coordinator, who teaches fantastic lessons to all of our students each and every week. Ann also shares the heart of these lessons in the Mountain Memo each week so you can also practice these skills at home. Additionally, she coordinates our Mountain Strong Family Series. Thanks, Ann!
Thank you to Kristen Kron, our counselor, who works with small groups of students each week to support student learning of a wide range of skills such as resiliency, friendship, and change. Kristen also teaches lessons to all of our classes on career and future planning. She also helps to support students and families in crisis and connect them with additional resources. Thanks, Kristen!
Thank you to Althea Abruscato, our Restorative Practices Coordinator, who helps students resolve conflicts on the playground and throughout the school. Althea also helps to train our staff in restorative conversations. Thanks, Althea!
Thanks to Jamie Smalley, our Behavioral Health Advocate, who works one-on-one with students and families who need more targeted support. Thanks, Jamie!
Finally, a big thank you to Challace Cole, our school psychologist, who works with students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) who need additional social-emotional or behavioral support. Thanks, Challace!
This entire team also works together to support our students and families and we’re so grateful for all of them!
Top 10 Social Emotional Learning strategies for a Happier Summer!
Help your child notice the sensations in their body and tie them to their emotional state, i.e. tight muscles or fidgety energy = feeling anxious
Help expand your child’s emotional vocabulary, i.e. what does it mean to be annoyed versus frustrated or envious? Encourage your child to specifically name what they are feeling and needing when they are upset. (Hunger or exhaustion often present as emotional outbursts.)
Teach your child to pause and take several deep breaths before responding to anything. This helps us stop and think of solutions, responses, and consequences instead of just reacting.
Create a cozy spot in your home where family members can go to regulate and soothe their emotions. Provide sensory toys, art, music and writing supplies. Use this space as a time-in to heal rather than a punitive time-out area.
Ask curious questions when you are upset. “I wonder why…..?” or “Tell me what’s going on for you?”
Consider how thoughts are affecting emotions and behavior. Are assumptions and negative thinking affecting everyone’s behavior? See if you can create a positive assumption about the situation.
Help your child notice and interpret the nonverbal communication of others – body language, tone of voice, facial expressions. Point out social cues to your child.
Coach your child to describe problems without blaming others. Separate the person from the problematic behavior. Own your feelings and needs instead of talking about the other person.
Help your child practice deep listening so that they can summarize the thoughts, feelings, needs, and perspective of others.
Take time to repair the relationship after a conflict – “I love you even when we aren’t getting along….” Offer genuine apologies for your part of the conflict. “I was frustrated, but I shouldn’t have yelled at you.” Reconnect with a hug.
