JULY BIRTHDAYS!!!

the seventh month of the year, July marks the transition from spring into the hot summer months. People born in July are fun-loving and are always cheerful. Usually, they take pride in all the things they do and are very independent by nature. Born under the influence of the zodiac sign, Cancer, these people can often be moody and sensitive. For them family comes first and they possess a strong sense of empathy towards others. Protecting their loved ones and maintaining healthy relationships with others is very vital for them. It would break their heart to let go of people they are very closely associated with. Though they make a lot of friends, they like to be spend time alone. Controlled by the moon, these individuals love to take care of and nurture their family members. When it comes to lifestyle or the dressing sense, they can be highly eccentric and always strive to be perfect. They make great friends and can be easily hurt. Though they are quick to forgive, they do not forget as quickly. Both at work and at home, they are very organized and are gifted with exceptional managerial skills which make them good team leaders or managers.

Dos and Don’ts of Safety

Of course you want to be ready for camp, but “ready” may not mean what you think. Being ready means being prepared to learn. Here are a few do’s and don’ts that will help.

DO…

Work your fundamentals. Often, we get used to doing the same four or five skills that we use at games and/or competition. Start with basic skills and work your way up through the progressions. When you get to camp, you may learn new skills that will require you to fall back on those fundamentals. It’s better to arrive with perfect preps or extensions than with shaky liberties.

Synchronize your squad. Whether it’s jumps, tumbling or stunts, make sure everyone is using the exact same approach on the same counts. It isn’t enough to start on the same count; you should be synchronized every step of the way. For example, in a back handspring, everyone should sit, touch their hands and feet to the ground and stand on the same counts. This will help when it comes time to incorporate skills into a larger routine or performance. Converting those counts to words will be a breeze and will get you prepared for evaluations much faster.

Acclimate yourself to the heat. If you are practicing in an air-conditioned gym all summer, you may be in for a rude awakening once you get to camp. If your camp is held outside, you should spend some time beforehand getting used to cheering outdoors.

Be in good physical condition. Being in shape is an ongoing process- not something you can do in a week. Be sure to cross-train so that you don’t overwork one area or muscle group. Even hitting your cheer motions on a regular basis will be helpful in decreasing the soreness that often occurs on Day 2 of camp.

DON’T…

Don’t practice too much. Building up strength and acclimating yourself to the outside temperatures are important, but be aware that too much is not necessarily a good thing. Over training can lead to lower performance levels and increases your chance of getting injured.

Don’t crash diet. Fitness and conditioning should be a part of your summer regimen, but they must be approached the right way. This means fueling your body with healthy foods and following a conditioning program that encompasses strength, cardio and flexibility training. Trying to get fit or lose weight too quickly will result in fatigue and injury.

Don’t worry about winning. Camp is about getting better. The best teams focus on “the process” and on improving every day. Your goal should be to leave camp a better team than when you arrived. Measure your success by how well you are prepared for the upcoming season.

COACHES CORNER

Hey There Knight Cheer Fam!

Here is our second monthly newsletter!

We just finished up our first Knight Pride Week of 2-a-day practices!! The teams did great! My coaching staff and I were beyond proud of all the hard work from those who consistently attended! The idea behind the 2-a-days is to prepare the teams for the grueling and intense camp schedule in a couple of weeks. I did not want our athletes to be blindsided by practicing from 9am-4pm. It can be a lot if you have never done it before.

Coach Heather was excited to begin stunting fundamentals and techniques with our freshman team and they did great! We had some movement between teams as well. Averie M. was brought up to JV and Alina Q., Brooke R., and Riley K. are now permanent members on V-Squad! We are excited for their accomplishments! The teams are all doing amazing and making great progress! The biggest obstacle that we face right now is getting all members to practice at one time. I am asking that you PLEASE make practices a priority! Our athletes are very talented and have the potential to be amazing but it is very difficult to build our skills and remain consistent when one or two people are missing from every practice.

Our BIG fundraiser will kick off on 07/11 so please be sure to share the link and encourage family, friends, and business owners to donate! Anython is offering some pretty cool incentives as well. Please reach out if you have any questions. Tanya McDaris is our point person on this one along with Jen Aldrich.

Coach Armando, Coach Heather, and I are really looking forward to camp!! Please feel free to reach out if you have any current concerns.

Remember to Keep it Classy and GOOOOO KNIGHTS!!
