Weekly Newsletter
January 11th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
I hope all of you had a restful winter break and a joyful holiday season. It was wonderful to see students return on Monday looking happy, rejuvenated, and ready for Term 3!
This week, students jumped right back into action with the Term 3 assembly, volleyball and table tennis orientations, and a fundraising effort to subsidize the cost of textbooks for students in need at a school in the Philippines.
There are many events on the horizon in Term 3 including volleyball & table tennis season, a 5th grade indoor soccer tournament, National History Day, NWEA MAP testing, the Winter Writing Competitions (English & Korean), KIMEA events, and more. Please find details within the newsletter.
In closing, we are pleased this week to welcome 2 new students to our CDS community. We look forward to getting to know them and their families better in the coming months.
5th Grade:
(5A) Kim, Sungwon (Dave)
8th Grade:
(8B) Lee, Gangjoon (Ryan)
Have a great weekend!

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support)
The PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) Team at CDS introduced four expectations that students should exhibit in all areas of the school during the Term 3 Assembly: be Respectful, have Integrity, be Safe, and be Engaged. Like a phoenix, CDS students will RISE to help create a supportive and positive school community. In the next few weeks, we will be discussing each expectation during morning house with the students and students will become familiar with each expectation and what it should look like in the classroom, hallways, and community areas of the school.
Be Respectful (존중하기), Have Integrity (정직하기), Be Safe (안전하게 생활하기) 그리고 Be Engaged (몰두하기)를 중심으로, CDS의 상징인 불사조처럼 학생들이 긍정적인 마음가짐으로 'RISE'하기를 바랍니다.

Student Council Update
The CDS Middle School completed their last stage of the Fill the Sleigh fundraiser over winter break. Our president, Sophia Seo, vice president, Han Na Shin, and Treasurer, Erica Jeon, delivered the essential items that were collected to Happy Home Orphanage in Incheon. There, they had the opportunity see the facility and meet with some of the people that work with the children who live there. Happy Home was very appreciative of the items that were raised and we hope to continue to work with them in the future!

Library Night
Activities will include an Olympian escape room, an Ancient Greek engineering (STEM) challenge, crafts, games, a Greek-themed dinner, and a charity raffle drawing to benefit a school in need.
Students can purchase tickets for a chance to win gift certificates to What the Book, cozy reading kits, Olympian graphic novels, and a Kindle Fire! As a change from last year, this year's schedule will be moved to an earlier time (2:45-6:30) to allow more students to participate. Therefore, all students should sign up with the linked Google Form to indicate if they will be attending for some or all of the festivities. See you there!

After Hours Policy /
All non-dorm students who wish to stay after school to participate in clubs and other school related activities must complete a permission slip. The After Hours Permission Slip is available in the MS Office and also on the middle school website: cdsmiddleschool.weebly.com. This document must be signed by the supervising teacher and a parent/guardian before 12:00pm on the day the student plans to stay after school. Non-dorm students must arrange their own ride home and may not stay on campus after 5:50pm.
‘After School Permission Slip’은 MS Office와 CDS 중학교 웹사이트: cdsmiddleschool.weebly.com에서 찾으실 수 있습니다.

Math with Mrs. Hinds
It mentions simple things you can do at home to help boost your child in math class. Some of the ideas discussed in the article include: making sure your child brings their textbook or notes home to have them out as a reference while they work on homework; resist giving your child the answer as soon as they start to struggle because that struggle is part of the learning process; and have your child discuss with you what they thought the important concepts were of the lesson after they have finished an assignment.
This is only a small sample of the ideas. For more information on these ideas and several others be sure to read the article and I hope you find it helpful.
