Weekly Update
We are excited to announce that we will continue the WATCH D.O.G.S. program at J. Sterling Morton Elementary School! Our Kickoff celebration will take place on September 19th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the school. This event is limited to current/future WATCH D.O.G.S and their student. Please call the office to RSVP for the event by September 16th!
Who are WATCH D.O.G.S.?
Fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father figures that volunteer for at least one school day in a variety of school activities that are assigned by the school administrator.
WATCH D.O.G.S. ® (Dads Of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative. There are 2 primary goals of the WATCH D.O.G.S. ® program.
1) To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
2) To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
WATCH D.O.G.S.® began in 1998 in a single school in Springdale, Arkansas and has since grown into a nationally recognized program that has brought hundreds of thousands of fathers and father figures into the school classrooms and hallways across the country, creating millions of hours of “in school” volunteer time and having a tremendously positive impact on the educational process.
The WATCH D.O.G.S.® program has been recognized by the United States Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and has been involved in the U.S. Department of Education’s P.F.I.E. (Partnership For Family Involvement In Education) and the Department’s Safe School Summit.
The school will provide pizza, refreshments, and a presentation by Mr. Malone. We will also hear from some outstanding father figures who have experienced the program first hand. WATCH D.O.G.S. will be provided time to sign up for the program and schedule their first experience as a WATCH D.O.G. at Morton Elementary. We encourage father figures to bring their child to enjoy this special opportunity.
United Way
The united way campaign begins on Monday. Please read the attached document for more information. Special activities and fundraising will occur in the front hallway from
8:15-8:30 a.m. and after school from 3:45-4:00 p.m.
Hy-Vee
One of our Partners in Education is Hy-Vee. The CASH FOR STUDENTS fundraising program is a great opportunity to help raise funds for Morton Elementary.
How does it work?
Simply keep your receipts and turn them into the school office. Hy-Vee will donate $1.00 for every $200.00 spent. Receipts must have a date on them. This fundraiser runs from September 1st to December 31.
Traffic Update
Traffic has been running efficiently on school grounds. We thank you for being patient and following the recommendations provided at the beginning of the school year and within this newsletter. We will remind you that the North parking lot is not designed for parent pick up and drop off. It is very important that we drive with extreme caution throughout the entire community. We have many students that walk home each day. Please obey the traffic signs and acknowledge all crosswalks.
