Men of Distinction

Vol. 2, ED. 12, 5.30.2018

Mr. Owens believes...

"As a nation, we are in need of educating EVERY child to their highest potential. We need to offer an avenue of hope and accomplishment to help children reach their goals. Mentorship has always been a part of my life and I hope that I will be able to leave a legacy of building up children so they won't become broken men. May our children leave us and go out into the world and make it a better place." ~ Mr. Melvin J. Owens

May 2018 Lunch and Learn

This learning opportunity for our young men was filled up with excitement, laughs, hugs, and tears. Thank you Mr. Dustin Wilson for speaking on community service, and how giving back is the sign of ultimate love for others. We owe it to one another to look out for the less fortunate and uplift our community. Mr. Wilson stressed the importance of getting involved right now and don't wait. Community service is something you should pursue for a lifetime and never forget someone looked out for you. Thank you Mr. Alphonso Williams for speaking about having a Plan B. What if your goal or dream doesn't work out? You could hear a pin drop while Mr. Williams was telling his life story and how he turned it around for the better. Mr. Williams went back to Florida State University 26 years later and earned his bachelor's degree in 2014! His rough upbringing didn't stop him from achieving his goals. What a sign of grit and determination and a great example for our young men to never give up. Thank you gentlemen for continuing to pour into our MODs!

2nd Annual MOD Dinner Celebration

We held our 2nd annual MOD dinner celebration on May 22, 2018 at 6pm here at Harmon. It was a wonderful way to end another successful year of community engagement and support for our students. The guest speaker for the event was Sports radio 1310/96.7 FM The Ticket host Donovan Lewis. Mr. Lewis spoke on never giving up and always working toward achieving your goals in life. He spoke of his upbringing and how mentor ship help guide him toward what he currently does for a living today. The event was full of encouragement, awards, and laughter. Mr. Jim Mustain, of the Loving Community Organization and fellow mentor, spoke about mentor ship and how important it is to our community. Mr. Mustain stated "that we can always make more money, but truly changing a life is what it is all about." Salerno's Italian Restaurant provided the meal and it was delicious as usual. The event ended with pictures and continued conversations about growing the program next year.
