National History Day
Conflict and Compromise is the theme for this year’s National History Day projects. This year students in 6th ,7th and 8th grade created projects focused on this theme. Students had the choice of constructing a website, creating a performance, putting together an exhibit, editing and producing a documentary or writing a paper. All could be done with a group or individually, except for the paper, which must be done individually.
Franklin had 40 students participate in National History Day this year. Students could choose to compete in the Iowa City competition or the Waterloo competition. Franklin advanced 17 students onto the state competition to be held in Des Moines on April 30th at the Iowa Events Center. This is due to the awesome work ethic and research skills of all of those involved! Prior to the competition students had visited the University of Iowa library and done extensive research relating to their topics. Many students did personal interviews with professors or authors regarding their topic. Getting top-notch primary sources is always a goal for National History Day students!

Optimist Speech
Where are my roots of Optimism? This was the theme for this year’s Optimist Oratorical contest in which 20 Franklin students participated this year.
Mr. Leon Lueck was the students’ coach and was very impressed with this year’s hard-working group of students!
The students began their optimism journey in October and contests are now coming to an end. Students competed at the various optimist clubs around Cedar Rapids. Some met in the morning, some at noon and some in the evening. You can be sure that all of the members greeted our students with smiles and encouragement. After all, they are “optimists!”
Students progressed to the next level if they earned gold medals at their competitions and eventually were invited to the zone competitions. Jessica Cline, Rolend Stewart, and Ahmed Elsheikh all advanced to the Zone finals in Fairfax on March 24th. 6th grader, Ahmed Elsheikh, earned the chance to advance for the boys to the Regional Finals in April in Iowa City with a speech about his grandfather. Jessica Cline and Rolend Stewart earned runner-up honors at the Fairfax competition.
