Welcome Nurse Eisenhauer

Hello Kulshan Families! I’m Amy Eisenhauer, and I’m excited to be the new nurse at Kulshan Middle School! Starting in May of 2018, I worked as a support nurse at many of the schools in the Bellingham School District. Before I came to Bellingham Public Schools, I worked at a family practice clinic. I have two teenagers, one dog, one cat, and two puppies! When I can find the time, I like to hike, garden, read, and play piano. I look forward to meeting you virtually and in person. Feel free to email me with any nurse related questions. Thank you!

Zoom Class Engagement

Students are doing a great job overall engaging in class. We encourage all students to keep their video on during class if possible, because this helps teachers and students connect with each other and engage at a much higher level. Reading facial expressions and cues (nonverbal communication) are so important for human connection. Plus, students say they miss seeing faces! We understand that there will be times when students will need to turn their videos off, and at the same time, please work with your students to encourage sharing their videos during class sessions.

Free Online Cooking Classes

Our Common Threads Food Educators are ready to begin a new round of cooking classes for kids ages 5+ on Zoom! Classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00-5:00 PM - just in time for you to enjoy what your kids made at dinner! Sign up to secure your spot in one of the first two classes (Confetti Slaw and Pasta Primavera). More classes will be added to the website each week.

Free YMCA Wifi!

Free Wifi for parents and students to assist with online learning. To reserve a spot, call the YMCA at 360-733-9630 or reserve your spot online. All are welcome, no YMCA membership required.

Wednesday Attendance

Did you know that we take attendance for all classes every Wednesday? Students will be marked present if they at least log in and check their MS Teams page. Please remind your students to do this every Wednesday for periods 1-4. Thank you!

KMS Attendance

If your child going to miss a class or a full day? Please email our Kulshan Attendance Secretary, Jeneen Durand, at:

kmsattendance@bellinghamschools.org or call us at (360) 647-6877.

Do you want to check out some fun books this coming week? Students can use this link to look at the online catalog. If you see something you want that is unavailable, you can log into Destiny and place a hold (same login as for your laptop). To request books, use this form. Mr. Shaffer and Ms. Stephanie will get your books ready for pickup. Books will be available to be picked up every Wednesday from 4:00 - 5:30 PM. Please enter your requests by the Tuesday before. Working 1:1 on Zoom

Thanks for all your continued partnership with us as we keep rolling in this brave new world. Our teachers are continuing to support your students as much as they can, which sometimes includes helping students 1:1 right after class or arranging to meet with students either in small groups or 1:1 on Zoom or Teams videoconferencing. Our teachers will work to inform you when meeting with students 1:1. If you have any questions about that, please reach out to a KMS administrator, counselor, or teacher.

Teen Summer Prizes!

We are so excited that we found a contact-free way to get tweens/teens their Summer Reading prize books! We will be mailing prize books to kids. They will fill out a form here. On the form they will fill out contact information along with their choice of prize book from the list of 20 options. The list of 20 books to select from can be found here. Thank you! Next PTSA meeting: Tuesday, Nov 10

We are so sorry! We had some technology kinks at our September PTSA meeting. We are working on this and things should be much smoother for our November PTSA meeting. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 10 at 6:30 PM. We will email the correct Zoom link to all KMS parents on the day of the meeting. And remember, you don't have to be a member to come to our meetings! See you there! Si necesita un intérprete para esta reunión, llame al 360-676-6456 para programarla.

Do you need Tech Support?

If students are unable to see the Zoom invites in their MS Teams or Outlook, here are some ways you can get your questions answered:

Mood Meter

As you might know, we use a social emotional curriculum called RULER, from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Our students know the Mood Meter well and they can explain how to use it. Families can use the Mood Meter at home every morning or evening. There is also a really helpful Mood Meter app if you want to learn more. Attached is a photo of a Mood Meter from a KMS classroom.

Wednesdays 4:00-5:30 PM: Meal Boxes

You can walk, bike, WTA bus, or drive to any of our 21 sites every Wednesday anytime from 4:00-5:30 PM for your 14-meal/7-day box. Si desea esta información en español llame al 360-676-6456 o via email.

Reminder: meal boxes are free for all children 0-18. Any family can go to any location and pick up a meal box. We are shifting to incorporating more Central Kitchen made-from-scratch items in meal boxes in the weeks to come, and really want to encourage families to pick up and try out meal boxes. School sites: Alderwood, Birchwood, Carl Cozier, Cordata, Geneva, Happy Valley, Northern Heights, Roosevelt, Wade King, Fairhaven, Kulshan, Shuksan, Whatcom, Bellingham, Sehome. Community sites: Sterling Meadows, Eliza Court, Villa Santa Fe, Evergreen Ridge Apartments, Regency Park, Sudden Valley Community Center.

Do You Need Personal Care Items?

Please reach out to our counselor, Jen Newbauer, if you or someone in your family are in need of any personal care items. This might include: shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothpaste/brush, deodorant, laundry detergent, tampons, pads etc. She will work on getting these items together and will work with you to determine a pick up plan. On that note, if you are able to donate any of these items, please click on this Sign Up Genius to help support your Kulshan Community.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

A key strategy in our Bellingham Promise is focused on our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This book - How to be an Anti-Racist is available for free via Bellingham Public Library or Libby. We used this book for our KMS Staff Summer Book Study with this list of discussion questions. We encourage families and students to embark on their own learning journey using this title or other young adult books that offer anti-racist views and perspectives. We are so glad we are on this journey with you.

KMS Student Artwork

Time to celebrate! Our very own Kulshan alumni, Jordynn Campbell, designed the cover art for the 2020-2021 Bellingham Public Schools District Handbook. Check out this article here to read more about Jordynn's artwork and activism. And if you would like to view the District Handbook online, click here. The handbook is also available in Spanish. Go Thunderbirds!

2020-2021 Kulshan PTSA

We would love to have 100% of our KMS families join our PTSA! And you can become PTSA member here! Membership rates are low and on a sliding scale. Meetings will be held once per month (normally about 1 hour) via Zoom. You can also follow Kulshan PTSA on Instagram by clicking this link. Do you have questions about our KMS PTSA? Email us here. Thank you!
