Did you know?
At Pine Avenue, students receive letter grades on their report cards. This is a change from how report cards are presented at the lower elementary.
Our new ELA program, Bookworms, is more rigorous than the past program used. Everyone has been working hard at learning routines and procedures that are a part of daily instruction. The focus of Bookworms is skills based, provides exposure to a variety of texts, and many opportunities to practice skills learned are provided. A bigger emphasis is placed on vocabulary and fluency than in the past.
Reading and writing are integrated and daily lessons are taught to provide students with additional instruction in the "DI block." Spelling is not presented in a "week-long" structure - rather new words are introduced every 5 days, which can get tricky when school weeks are shorter or there's a snow day. Your student's teacher will communicate when spelling tests are scheduled to take place. With anything new, there is a learning curve for everyone. Scaffolding and supports are given to students to comprehend and work with grade level content in order to best meet their individual learning needs.
We are excited about the progress we are seeing in students as we create 'bookworms' at Alma Public Schools!
Panther Pride Food Drive
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your support of the food drive! We raised a total of 755 items for the food pantry. What an incredibly generous school community we have!
Parking Lot Reminder
When dropping off or picking up a student, it is imperative to pull beyond the cones or park in the lot if it is necessary to leave the vehicle and enter the building anytime during the day. We need to leave that lane clear at all times.
If you are dropping a student off after parking in the parking lot, they must be walked across the parking lot by an adult. Student safety is essential.
Thanks!

Alma Elementary PTO
The Alma Elementary PTO is made up of parents and teachers who want to give students in the three Alma elementary schools the opportunity to participate in enriching experiences and to have the best material and equipment we can provide. Examples of PTO sponsored events include: field trips, assemblies, carnivals, concerts, science alive, reindeer visits, playground equipment, etc.
When parents get connected to the schools, children do better. In addition to the ideas and opinions that we love to hear, the children also benefit from parent volunteers who can donate a little time to make it happen. Please consider attending our monthly meetings and/or volunteering for a particular event when future messages are sent home or contact one of the representatives listed here.
To find out more about what the PTO is doing, please join us at our monthly meetings on the third Monday (usually) of each month at 6:30 pm. Free child care is always provided! The first meeting will be at Luce, the second one at Hillcrest, the third one at Pine and then the rotation begins again. The dates for the PTO meetings are the third Monday of each month unless there is no school on that Monday. If that is the case, then the meeting will be moved to the following Monday.

Medication Authorization Form
Families: A medication authorization form must be filled out annually if your student requires medications to be distributed at school. Contact Mrs. Schaub in the office at 989-466-7651 if you are in need of a form.
Please make sure your student and their teacher is aware of how each student will be getting home each day. We know things come up and changes need to be made throughout the year. Please remember to send a note with your child in the morning if there are any changes. If you need to call during the day to make a change, please do so by 2:00pm, so we can make sure we make the proper arrangements.
