Highlights from Week 20: January 25-29

Hello Families!

I hope you're having a nice weekend! It was another fun week, with so much exploration and learning. This week we learned about the growth mindset and always giving our best. We also studied empathy, and practiced 'walking in someone else's shoes' to identify ways we can be more patient and support friends and family. In reading, we finished our study on -ed suffixes and continued reading groups.

Friday was a report card prep day for me and I loved seeing your children grow as writers. Their personal narratives had me laughing out loud at times, full of details and transition words to keep their stories organized. Next week, we will begin report writing. This is usually a favorite for many first graders, as we get to explore non-fiction texts and some amazing facts. Report cards should go home on February 12th.

It is hard to believe we are starting our first week of February! Please see below for information on our Valentine's Day/Friendship Party on February 12th.

Hope was great Top Dog last week. She chose Lucas as our Top Dog this week, and the smile on his face was priceless. We look forward to welcoming him to that spot next week.

Check out our classroom updates, and as always, be sure to contact me with any questions. Hope you're enjoying some family time this weekend.

Thank you for the hand sanitizer and pencils!

Valentine's Day/Friendship Party

Hi parents!

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and we want to make a fun party for our class! We will be having a class party on Friday, February 12th from 1:45-2:40. We plan to have a craft, pass out Valentines, play some quick games, and finally let kids open Valentines and have a cookie and juice. We would love some extra help for this to make sure we can pull it off! If you're able to help us at the party, could you please let us know, that will help us know how many activities we can plan for!
You can email me at, Kim at, or Alicia at
Thank you!!!

Listen and Sketch

We are learning to visualize as readers. To build these skills, students have been listening as I read The Magical Ms. Plum. They draw a picture to support the details of the story, and then we write a summary. Check out some student work from a few Listen and Sketch notebooks.

Volunteering in the Classroom

For February and March, I am adjusting our volunteer time slots slightly. I am hoping to have some help during our Literacy Block, which covers writing (9:15-10:00) and reading as well (10:00-11:00). Please sign up to join us just once, or every week. We love having our volunteers in the classroom!

A big thank you to Julie, Shannon, Jenny and Dana, who have all been in on a weekly basis!
