THE GRAND SHOALS THEATER
The Shoals Theater on North Seminary Street in downtown Florence opened its doors to the public in 1948. It was a wonderful scene that evening as people came not just from Florence but from all of North Alabama and beyond to see the initial movie and to enjoy the elegance of this fine building. The movie, entitled “That Lady in Ermine,” was not destined to become a classic; in fact, it’s hardly remembered today, except by true movie buffs. But the experience of the evening would be remembered forever by the throng who was there. When people walked up to the ticket window that night, they were dazzled by the multitude of lights shining from the marquee across the front and partially down the side of the building. Atop the marquee was a most unusual sight: a 21-foot-tall sign that, vertically, from the top down, bore the one word, “Shoals.” Almost magically, lights cascaded down the side of the tall sign, simulating the open spillways at Wilson Dam. (Each light was shaped, roughly, like the numeral “6”; by shaping the lights in this fashion, the designer knew they would appear to be water rolling down a spillway.) Going inside the theater that evening was almost overwhelming because of its elegant red carpet, its subdued lighting, and its wide, wide screen that was revealed when the beautiful curtain was opened for the first time. It is exciting to know that the future of the Shoals Theater is secure now that it is owned and operated by the Shoals Community Theatre, a non-profit organization whose goal is to maintain the grand building while using it as a venue for all types of entertainment for the public.
