JBD SEAGULL FOCUS
September 21, 2018 “Embrace the Adventure!”
From the Principal
Very often, I am asked about spelling instruction. Most adults experienced the weekly spelling lists, writing words 3 times, use them in a sentence, copy the definition, etc. Some of you reading this may be shaking you head saying, "It worked for me!" Also, you may wonder why Virginia Beach City Public Schools does not have the traditional spelling test program in the curriculum. The reason is, that according to research, it actually didn't work for 'us'. Spelling and vocabulary instruction and retention is not the reason many of you are out there as great spellers, or maybe some of you are saying that you could never pass spelling tests. Vocabulary instruction comes from integration with areas of study and interest. Spelling instruction depends on patterns and non-patterns. Simply memorizing how words are spelled is not the key to literacy success. 10-20 words a week is a drop in the bucket to the 100's of words our children are reading and exposed to on a daily basis through our reading instruction in grades K-5. Our word study programs utilize sound patterns, focus on 'oddballs' which are the ones that don't exactly follow patterns, and phonics rules and exceptions. Children are encouraged to look for words with the patterns they are studying in their literature. Sorting the words builds a recognition of the patterns that can be retained far longer than memorizing a new list each week. In grades 4 and 5, that knowledge is extended to making the connection to Greek and Latin roots as foundations to our language. Learning the spelling patterns of prefixes, suffixes, and roots, such as "port"-means to carry, can literally transport a student's ability to comprehend new vocabulary more efficiently, therefore enhancing overall reading comprehension and critical thinking.
The link below has more research based explanations of the word study vs. spelling programs and why they are best for our students as 21st Century learners.
We look forward to another amazing week and thank you again for being partners in education with JBD.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Bianchi
