News & Notes from Josiah Haynes Elementary School

December 3, 2020

Dear Families,

A question I get asked a lot right now, in all facets of my life, is some shade of, "but, how are the kids doing with the safety protocols in school?"

The answer, quite honestly, is that they are doing really well. I have been pleased to see as well as hear from teachers how serious our students are taking these measures, and how little resistance there is to our new expectations. When offered reminders, students are quick to adjust their masks or slow down to allow for a six-foot distance from the student in front. Our teachers have adapted their schedules and teaching routines to accommodate these measures. Paired with regular mask breaks and prescheduled handwashing times throughout the day, our students are doing quite well, and helping to keep themselves and each other healthy and safe while in school.

Here's to another month of a healthy Haynes!

Join us in Celebrating Officer Hutchinson!

A School Resource Officer like no other, Officer Al Hutchinson is set to retire at the end of this month. Please join in helping to celebrate Officer Hutchinson's years of service to Sudbury, but more importantly, to our schools.

Please consider contributing to a VIDEO SLIDESHOW and MEMORY BOOK that will be given to Officer Hutchinson. It's easy! Snap a picture of your student/students/family holding a sign with a message for Officer Hutchinson. Images can be emailed to Dee Tupta at cdtupta@gmail.com. Please submit your photo by Friday, December 11.

Officer Hutchinson has meant a lot to the SPS community, giving children the knowledge and information they need when handling tricky situations. He is always a friendly face in the schools, outside at pick up/drop off and reading stories with Quaran "Story" Time on the Sudbury Police Facebook Page. Officer Hutchinson has been a driving force behind Sudbury's participation in the Special Olympics, and has taught the fifth grade STARS program for years.

We ask that you and your children try to keep this a surprise!

Car Line Safety Reminder

A reminder that students are allowed to exit/enter vehicles in the car line on the PASSENGER SIDE ONLY. Students should not enter the road and enter on the driver's side. This protocol, part of our arrival/dismissal plan developed in partnership with the Sudbury Police Department, is designed to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your cooperation!

You can view our complete arrival/dismissal plan here.

Flu Vaccine Deadline is December 31

As a reminder, all students enrolled at Haynes (in-person AND remote) are required to provide evidence of getting a flu vaccine by December 31. Please email Haynes Nurse Lisa Nigrelli at lisa_nigrelli@sudbury.k12.ma.us with verification of this requirement, as well as any questions you might have related to the vaccine.

You can learn more about this state guideline here.

Thank You, HOP!

Haynes School was recently the recipient of a generous grant from the Haynes Organization of Parents to fund the addition of texts to our expanding Leveled Library. The collection, affectionately called the "book room," houses text sets organized by instructional reading levels that teachers use for the express purpose of teaching reading strategies and skills. With this donation, Haynes was able to add 150 texts to the collection--all targeted at our earliest readers. Thank you, HOP!

Math Bags Sustain Hands-On Learning

from Math Specialist Julie Whitehead

I want to thank all of the Haynes community for doing such a wonderful job keeping track of their Math Bags that have been given to every student at Haynes. We continue to add important items into the bags and will begin to ask that some materials be returned to school so we have space for more. These bags have been essential for students to access the math content being taught by their classroom teachers. If you have any questions regarding the math bags, please do not hesitate to contact me at julie_whitehead@sudbury.k12.ma.us.

Students engaging in mindfulness with Calm Classroom

Among the new curricular programs supporting students at Haynes this year is Calm Classroom. The Calm Classroom program provides 3-minute mindfulness-based practices to be used on a consistent schedule during the school day. These practices support the development of self-awareness, focus, and emotional resilience that foster a healthy and empowering learning environment. Students and teachers continue to report the positive impact that Calm Classroom and mindfulness strategies are having on learning throughout the day. Be sure to ask your child about their mindfulness practices in school--and any that may carry over home, too!

Recognize a Special Educator this Holiday Season!

Submitted by the Sudbury Education Resource Fund

Purchase a SERF ACE Award (Appreciation of Champions in Education Awards) as a way to thank a teacher, coach, specialist, staff, counselor or administrator! Each ACE Award donation has a double impact: you are paying tribute to your child’s teacher(s) while simultaneously supporting innovative and enriching educational programs. When you give an ACE Award, your star educator will receive a certificate of honor and will be recognized on SERF's website.

Donations for ACE Awards are tax deductible and accepted all year. The deadline to give an ACE Award to be delivered before the winter break is Wednesday, December 16th. If due to COVID restrictions only digital copies are allowed, a printed copy will be delivered when allowed.
