Keeping staff informed about GISD through news and views!

November 21, 2014

Welcome to the New InnerViews!

Have you been missing InnerViews? It's back, and with a whole new look! GISD's leadership team has been working behind the scenes to update the look, content, and delivery of the InnerViews staff newsletter. Staff input has been incorporated into the reshaping of this internal communication tool, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions. Send them any time to

This staff newsletter has been a GISD tradition for many years and will continue to include news and information important to GISD's hardworking and dedicated staff!

What is Leadership?

The leadership crew has been exploring a common definition through a number of activities, including sharing stories, reading, and viewing examples. One that stood out was this short video of a young man taking action to address an obstacle.

As a result of this work, the crew developed the following working definition of a leader - Acting on the belief that what you do can make a difference, and those beliefs include:

  • I make an impact.
  • What I do matters.
  • My words can inspire others.
  • My actions can move others.
  • I can influence positive change.
  • What I do counts.
  • Everyone can be a leader.

Everyone at GISD can be a leader through their everyday actions. The crew identified many things that we do on a daily basis, many of which were derived from the propeller activity that each building and department completed at the beginning of the year. Take a different look at leadership here, and find the ways that you are a GISD leader!

STAR Award Recipient

Megan Kinsler, Project Coordinator – Reception Desk, Erwin L. Davis Education Center, was recently recognized at a GISD Board of Education meeting with the STAR Award! The colleague that nominated her noted that Megan provides the correct information, at the correct time, and in the correct manner - all while consistently displaying strong interpersonal skills when interacting with GISD customers. Megan integrates the GISD mission into her everyday actions. Congratulations and thank you for making every guest feel welcome, Megan!

The STAR award recognition program is open to all employees. To nominate a staff member, simply complete the nomination form that is available in the Staff Resources area of the GISD website and in the main office of GISD school buildings.

Welcome Jeff Adams!

GISD is pleased to welcome Jeffrey Adams as its new Director of Human Resources. Jeff comes with six years of HR experience and a wide spectrum of other school administrative background, including ten years as director of pupil services in Hamtramck Public Schools. Jeff and his wife Jeanna have three children ranging in age from four to eight. When not working, Jeff coaches several youth sports teams including baseball and football. We are so excited to have Jeff join the GISD family. Take a moment to introduce yourself to Jeff and welcome him aboard!

United Way Campaign Update

We are nearing the end of the United Way employee campaign and, thanks to generous donors, we are well on our way to reaching our goal. But, we still need help raising the final $5,000. Your donation, no matter the amount, can help us meet our goal and will have a dramatic impact on the lives of those in our community. A financial gift to United Way of Genesee County affects the lives of thousands, because United Way is dedicated to supporting programs and activities that focus on long-term changes that benefit everyone – including you. The United Way supports 41 local programs and serves over 50,000 individuals annually. It is the only community-wide payroll deduction campaign that supports a wide range of community strategies to assist the most vulnerable citizens.

Please consider making a donation to the United Way campaign. It takes an entire community to make a difference, and together we can.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign!

If you work at the Erwin L. Davis Education Center, or have visited there recently, you may have noticed some missing (or new) signs. As the next step in the process of relocating several departments and staff, the directional signage at the Erwin L. Davis Education Center needed to be updated. The first phase of this updating process is to modify the external signs so that staff and visitors know which entrance will best allow access to the department they are seeking. Next, the internal signs will be updated to signal which direction staff and visitors should go to get to the right place. Due to the many other changes throughout the district, there are still some signs that need to be updated or replaced. Please be patient during this process of continuous improvement. These additional upgrades are in the planning.

Hey, Wait a Minute! What about...?

In this first edition of InnerViews, we've included some information of importance across the entire organization and there are bits and pieces from several departments that may be of interest to colleagues in other parts of the organization. We realize that there may be things you know that we don't. This is an open invitation to submit that information for inclusion in a future InnerViews. Because this staff communication will now be on a bi-weekly schedule, we can include information more frequently that may be of interest to other staff. So whether you want to recognize fellow staff for their accomplishments; share special family moments like births, graduations, or weddings; or you have resources that are of interest to our colleagues, just send it along to Thank you for your help in making InnerViews a staff featured, staff led, and staff read communication tool.

Your Chance to Experience GISD Onboarding!

By now, many of you know that for the past year or so Onboarding has been provided to new employees. Onboarding serves as way to educate new GISD employees on all of the services that our organization provides to the community, and introduces them to many GISD procedures and practices.

The Reboarding process started in January 2014 so that existing employees can also participate in this rewarding experience. The goal is that all employees who are interested in Reboarding can take advantage of this opportunity to experience all the great things we do at the GISD! See your program administrator to sign up for an upcoming session.
