What is PBIS?
Students have been busy these first seven days of school learning and reviewing school routines and expectations. Woodfield Elementary is a Wisconsin RtI Center Recognized School for Behavior and the staff at Woodfield is committed to implementation of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) and strives to provide the best experience and opportunities for all of our students.
Over the next few months, I will share more about PBIS and how families may support their child(ren) from home. I will also include updates on school PBIS goals and the progress students are making. This week I will provide some background on what PBIS is and how it supports our students at Woodfield. We are all looking forward to an amazing year! If you have any questions about PBIS, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Jessica Grimm, Principal
What is PBIS?
According to PBIS.org, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.
Schools implementing PBIS:
- Use a continuum of evidence-based practices to support student needs
- Engage students, families, and community members to co-create culturally responsive practices
- Regularly check the effectiveness of their practices
- Rely on teams to guide implementation
- Use data to identify strengths, uncover needs, and monitor student progress
- Implement universal screening
- Develop content expertise through coaching and on-going professional development
PBIS is not a curriculum, it is an ongoing commitment to supporting students, educators, and families through systems change. When you implement PBIS well, students experience improved behavioral, social, emotional, and academic outcomes; schools and programs reduce their use of exclusionary discipline practices and improve their overall climate.
