Pinehill School News

9 June 2021 - Week 6, Term 2

Message from our Principal

Kia ora tatou,

I’m starting with some very exciting news. We are delighted to inform you that the school production will go ahead this year at Pinehill School!

Term 3 Production Term - Save the Dates

COVID lockdowns may have prevented us from putting on our biennial school production in 2020, however, this year we are going full steam ahead. In line with the National Education Learning Priorities (The Statement of National Education and Learning Priorities (NELP) & Tertiary Education Strategy (TES), all students in years 4-6 will be involved. The production is a big part of our arts curriculum honouring the dance, drama, and music curriculum.

The production titled ‘Gillian: Dog in the Big City’ will run over three evenings. Students will need to arrive at 6pm to get face painted and costume ready in time for a 7pm show start, on the evenings below. The show will run for approximately 1 hour. We are giving you advance notice to support you with rebooking or re-organisation with other events that students might usually take part in on these evenings.

  • Tuesday 21st September

  • Wednesday 22nd September

  • Thursday 23rd September

More information will follow as planning, organisation and timelines unfold. In the meantime here is a brief synopsis of what is in store!

Gillian, Dog in the Big City - Synopsis

Gillian the dog has been having the best summer ever playing with her human, Rolf. But one day Rolf disappears, going to a mysterious place called school. Gillian escapes and follows his trail into the big city. Fellow pets Mitzi (a cat) and Orlando (a bird) join her as she discovers all the wonders and dangers of the city. They encounter scary alley cats, meet a band of friendly strays, and all the while are being chased by the horrible Dogcatcher. The city is a lot bigger and scarier than she thought, but with help from her fellow animals, Gillian makes it through her adventure and back to her best friend.

The school disco last Thursday evening was the highlight of the year to date for many of our children. The Black and White theme was embraced by all! Thank you so much to our dedicated FOPS committee members for organizing the event and the many parents and staff who helped on the night. Your support is appreciated.

Paid Union Meeting - 22nd-24th June

The first round of paid union meetings are coming up. Teachers are entitled to attend two paid union meetings a year. The school will not be closing on these dates. Some classes may have a different teacher for one afternoon, however we are working hard to ensure minimal disruption.

Parent Catch Up with Principal - Tuesday 22nd June (9am-10:30am)

You are invited to come along to a meeting in the staffroom to connect, catch up and chat, as well as have any questions you may have answered. Topics discussed at this catch-up include The Pinehill Way, Learning Language, ESOL requirements, understanding your child's school report, as well as our process for any concerns you may have. This is a great opportunity to meet the Principal and ESOL staff (available to support with translation) in an informal meeting to answer questions and get to know each other. Morning tea will be provided.

New Enrolments

Enrolments for Term 3 are now being taken at the office. If you have a younger child starting school this year, please let the office know asap. If you know of any families who have a 4 year old who will be starting school this year, and live in the Pinehill School zone, please encourage them to contact the office regarding their child’s enrolment. Please see the school website for zoning and enrolment criteria details.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini

Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Ngā mihi nui,

Trees for Survival - an environmental opportunity for Year 5/6 students

It’s tree planting time!

An information letter and gear list for this worthwhile trip was sent home last Thursday and is also available on the website. Please make sure the permission slip is returned to your child's class teacher by this Friday, 11 June.

We are also in need of approximately 60 additional adults to support our planting out day. An adult could be a parent, fit grandparent, an auntie, uncle, family friend or older sibling over the age of 18. If your family can provide 2 adults, please write both names on the return slip.

This is the first time that we will be taking the whole Year 5/6 team which is very exciting. We thank you in advance for your valuable support.

With the weather turning and the fields becoming more muddy, please talk with your children about where they are playing at break times. If they are going to play in areas that are likely to become muddy over the winter months then it may be sensible to pack a spare change of uniform in case they get muddy. We have very limited supplies of spare uniform, especially in larger sizes, that we can use to change children.
