Classroom News
Sight Words-We will have a new list of sight words coming home on Monday. The words are :had, him, with, all, look . We will test on FRIDAY. Please review last weeks words. Many students had problems with the word SAID. We have students writing it as "SED" The words we tested this Friday were : for, they, she,on,but
Word Their Way- please do not have your child glue word or picture items to their sorting mats until Thursday. They need to be moving the pieces around. Students are bring sorts back with pictures glued to them on Tuesday. This makes us sad. They are practicing moving the pictures or words over and over again. They do need to have a sort set for home. They will have another one for school. On test day the spelling teacher will provide a 3rd sort set.
We are working on reading students have been placed in small reading groups. They are working on various skill-rhyming, initial sounds, final sounds, syllable counts, adjectives and sight words. Each reading group is different and supports what the students are learning in class.
We are starting a change on our reading this 9 weeks. We have just started to launch our first research project. Students have been discussing a historical figure-Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. We have discussed how they were inventor. We have discussed what an invention is. We have explored how the telephone and electric light bulbs have impacted the world. They will be doing more research over the next few weeks on inventors and inventions. As we move through this we will be learning about biographies and text feature-such as a table of contents, glossary and index. Students will be interviewing parents and family members with some questions about telephones in the near future. Just in time for Thanksgiving gatherings.
Social Studies- We will be working on the research project listed above. Student will be learning about the past and present. We will be exploring timelines. We will also discuss the traditions of Thanksgiving and how Thanksgiving came to be.
Math- We are working on patterns. Yes patterns. We will be building this to look more deeply into number knowledge and number fluency. We will be working on expanding our number fluency. Knowing that 21 is not 12 and 12 is not 21. We need to be counting out loud on a 120's chart-which we provided in your child's homework folder. Students need to be able to count forward and backward. Please listen to them count. They have the most problem counting backwards. We suggest you pick a number between 119 to 19. Ask them to count back from that number to another number. Example : Count backwards from 48 to 28.
Also have them count forward in the same fashion. Example: Count forward from 83 to 115. We heard a lot of struggling counters when we did our pre-assessment.
Science - We will be learning about how light, heat and sound are important in our everyday life. We will be investigating Energy in Action. We will learn how the sun is gives us energy to heat our homes and help grow plants. We will look at how sound energy gives us music. We will explore heat energy-how is it made and where does it come from.

Cold and Flu season is HERE!
Your child’s health is of great importance. It is that time of year when colds, flu and viruses run wild in schools, churches, and other public places. We will take every precaution to have a healthy and safe environment. Please consider getting a flu shot for yourself and your child. Having the flu is not any fun and can be life threatening for young children.
We would like you to consider keeping your child home if they have fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It is requested that students be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please don't give your child a fever reducer and send them to school. Our bodies create a fever to fight viruses and to give us a warning that we are sick. When you send a child to school sick you will be impacting 20 plus families in addition to the teachers and their families. Teachers don't like missing days of school due to illness.
If your child becomes ill while at school, we will take them to the school nurse. The nurse will evaluate your child and contact you to let you know if you need to pick your child up. Please keep in mind the only person on campus that can give any medication is our school nurse.
Weather and Clothing
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. If you send sweaters or jackets, please make sure you have written your child’s name on the tag or in the article of clothing. We are still planning on going outside unless it is raining or snowing.
