My primary goal as the Principal of Memphis School of Excellence is to provide a safe, welcoming environment that provides our students with the skills they need to be successful in learning, leadership, and life. The MSE staff are preparing your students for a future that is ever-changing. As a result, we strive to facilitate learning that encourages students to become thinkers! Through the use of 21st century, research-based learning strategies and the increased use of technology, I believe we can accomplish this goal. I encourage all of our parents to follow us online to see all the wonderful things taking place at MSE.
I am very hopeful that this school year is going to be an exciting year for everyone. Additionally, please remember, parents and community members are always welcome at Memphis School of Excellence.
As I begin my 3rd year as principal at MSE, I want to thank you for your continued support. I am looking forward to another great year at MSE.

Book Fair
Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history!
Our Fall 2019 book fair is here! Scholastic book fair begins on September 10th. The MS book fair will be located in room 126. Parents will be able to shop on Wednesday the 18th, after parent teacher conferences.
All students will have a chance to visit the fair and make purchases.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school. Thank you for supporting our readers!

Grandparents Day
Tips from Mrs. Ward, Dean of Students K-4
10 Ways to Improve Children's Behavior (Home/School)
- Verbally acknowledge children’s efforts (i.e. Keep up the good work, I am proud of you, praise for positive actions displayed).
- Use positive body language to show approval for positive behavior (i.e. high five or thumbs up).
- Use humor with your child/student(s) (i.e. make jokes, listen to their jokes, be silly, & have fun)
- Show your child/student(s) that you are happy to see them (i.e. smile at them, put your arms out for a hug, ask about their day).
- Remind your child/student(s) that they should be proud of themselves (i.e. "You worked so hard, you should be proud of yourself").
- Take an interest in your child’s/students’ interests (i.e. ask them what do they enjoy, get excited about creations/accomplishments, do activities with them)
- Acknowledge your child/student(s) feelings with empathy (i.e. be understanding, never say things like "you'll get over it" instead lead with"I understand" or "how may I help").
- Be open minded and don’t pass judgment on your children/student(s) if their thoughts, values, feelings, or ideas don’t match yours (i.e. allow them to have an opinion").
- Be a role model for good behavior (i.e. be the example of what you would like to see).
- Follow through on your promises and rules (barring unforeseen consequences) and stay away from empty threats (i.e. have consistent expectations/consequences & always follow through).

A Note from the Academic Coordinator
Teaching and learning is off to a wonderful start this year at Memphis School of Excellence! All of our students have successfully completed the first round of NWEA MAP testing, which has given our teachers a wealth of data from which to design intentional, student-specific instruction. We have also just completed our first round of benchmark exams in grades 3-7, which gave our scholars the opportunity to showcase their academic excellence and mastery of the content they've learned so far this year. Our school is growing, and so are the minds of our scholars. We can't wait to see where the 2019-2020 school year takes us!

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support)
Every day, your student has the opportunity to receive either points (5-7) or Eagle Bucks (K-4). These points are given to students for following expectations, and going above and beyond as scholars.
Periodically, we'll have celebrations to honor the students that have been working so hard throughout the year. Our PBIS system is a way to encourage students for all of the work they do every single day, and to teach them that hard work never goes without reward.
