CompSci Weekly
February 5, 2024 - February 9, 2024
Principal Message
Dear CompSci Families,
We had a great week here at school. This week the SPAM team (7B) went to the New Britain Museum of American Art and really enjoyed themselves. They had the chance to tour the facility and discuss what they were seeing. Our Cheer Team and Pom Team were in a competition over last weekend, and placed 2nd and 1st respectively in their divisions. Our basketball teams have also been working hard!
Today report cards went out, so if you didn't receive one for your child please let me know. Additionally, the 8th grade teams gave out the mindset awards today. These awards are based on our core principles, which illustrate a "Soaring Eagle":
- Show Leadership
- Embrace Opportunity
- Aim for Excellence
- Be Resilient
Each mindset reporting area ends with students recieving awards in these categories. It gives kids something to strive for. Ask your child how they exemplify these attributes!
Finally, Black History Month started yesterday. Each day a member of the Student Equity Team has prepared and delivered a bio of a Black American. The History club is also sharing facts. Today all kids watched this short clip, that I think you will enjoy! Black History (It's Yours) | Black History Month Rap Anthem | Animated Music Video (youtube.com)
Enjoy the weekend, it looks like the sun is going to come out!

Equity Corner: Episode 16
Greetings Comp Sci Families!
This week students finished creating their art project for Racial Justice Week. They made puzzle pieces that all fit together, with the social justice cause or issue of their choice on them. They loved being able to think about how they could change the world creatively!
Have a wonderful weekend,
~Ashley Hanse & Kendal Lumpkin

CompSci Students and Families!
In February (February Frenzy) and March (March Mad Dash), the Academy of Computer Science & Engineering Middle will be launching an exciting attendance plan with our collaborating partner The Mega Education Foundation. By actively participating during these months, students will not only enhance their academic and social learning, but they will also receive an opportunity to earn fabulous prizes as a result of their commitment to being present and engaged in school. So, what’s our purpose and the value of this endeavor, your consistent attendance not only fuels your personal growth but also contributes to fostering a vibrant community of learners. Students in grades 6 – 8 will have an opportunity to have their name entered into a gift card raffle if they attend school 4 or more days per week. At the end of the week, two winners will be notified. After 8 weeks, CompSci and Mega Education will hold an assembly for all students. In addition, students with perfect attendance will be entered into a separate raffle for a grand prize raffle (to be determined by Mega Education). In other words, students all you need to do is attend school as expected! Seize this opportunity to expand your horizons and make these months a pivotal point in your educational journey!

CREC’s Statement of Diversity and Inclusion
“Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) is an intentionally diverse social justice organization whose members work to acknowledge, respect, and empathize with people of all different identifiers, such as race, socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, education, age, ability, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and religion. In accordance with CREC’s mission of equity, excellence, and success for all through high-quality educational services, our staff and students commit to participate in and support ongoing equity and inclusion programming through curricular and co-curricular offerings, professional learning, and local and national partnerships. Moreover, CREC staff and students strive to understand and confront the symptoms and causes of systematic oppression—ranging from implicit biases to micro aggressions to discriminatory policies, practices and traditions—that benefit privileged groups. While at CREC, staff and students commit to affirm and honor the lived experiences of others, to willingly challenge inherited beliefs and ideologies, and consequently learn, grow, and serve.”
