BSE Bear Blast
September Edition
Message from Mr. Hoog & Mrs. Rich
There is much to celebrate with our documentation walls beginning to take shape showcasing teaching and learning at BSE. The blank walls inside of classrooms have grown with family pictures, self portraits, symbols, artwork, and authentic evidence of science and math discoveries. How's your environment coming along?
Teams are now living in "team rules" week by week as we lean on one another for moments of strength and weakness. We saw this building wide on Friday as Marabeth recognized. We are a tribe that carries one another arm in arm. Is there someone on your team that could use some extra love this week?
Below is jam packed with a lot of information. Please take time to review all of the information. Some more information will be coming in person but we thought we'd get logistics out to you now. Please ask for any clarification as needed.
We are proud of the start of our year and want to continue the great practices of teaching, learning, and teamwork. When we enjoy coming to work everyday that is something to celebrate. Continue greeting our children, using their names, and pausing as we really listen to them with our whole body. The evidence of curriculum planning across all subject areas is proof your team is working hard. Thank you. Keep on BSE Bears!

Parent Teacher Conferences
Our goal is to have you meet with 100% of your families sometime in the month of October.
- Please make face to face opportunities your priority.
- Please send reminders (as we all need them!) and this will help decrease no shows!
- Please make contact to any no shows and document all attempts.
- Start with positives!
- Be sure to allow for questions from families.
- What can you do to make it interactive and fun?
- Will you do the sharing or will the child?
An administrator will be available 4-7 PM the following evenings to help with specific conferences and manage traffic through front doors. If you have a conference scheduled outside of these evenings and would like an administrator present, just send a calendar invite to Mr. Hoog or Mrs. Rich to support you.

Communication Across Building
- When inside the classroom please have phones ON and ringer ON.
- You are required to answer when it is Mrs. Sweet or an Office Staff staff member otherwise voicemail will pick it up.
- When leaving the classroom for lunch/recess/library/collaborating in other classrooms please take radio and have ON. (It may remain off to decrease distractions while in classroom only.)
Radios:
- Avoid back and forth conversation and if people "copy". Say your name/who is needed/and location all in one. Although we appreciate the politeness, thank yous are not needed unless for acknowledgement message was heard.
- If immediate assistance is needed from Admin/Office-Nurse/or Resource Staff please ensure this situation is an "I need help right now" situation and be brief.
For example:
Request: "Admin to Mrs. Kraick." Response: "Mr. Hoog on my way."
Request: "Resource needed in Mr. Anders." Response: "Chevillet can be there in 2 mins."
Call First:
- Many of you have shared that calling first has helped decrease the need for radio. Thank you and the office and nurse are attempting this as well.
There are some non emergency situations that the radio must be used such as:
Mrs. Sweet sending a child outside during extra recess to make sure teacher is still out there. OR
Sheri calling for a child to leave building and class is outside at recess.

Restorative Practices & Discipline
"Restorative practices make people happier, more cooperative, more productive and more likely to make positive changes when those in positions of authority do things with them rather than to them or for them."
We will begin to look at this at each age level in order to take these practices to scale school wide and make differences for kids early on. Is this something new? No. Is it different? Yes.
"What's fundamental about restorative practices is a shift away from thinking about laws being broken, who broke the law, and how we punish the people who broke the laws."
There's a shift to:
- There was harm caused.
- There may be disagreement or dispute.
- There's conflict.
- How do we repair the harm? address the conflict?
- How can we meet needs so that relationships and community can be restored?
"It's a different orientation. It is a shift."
Administration has been practicing restorative circles the last few weeks and will bring teachers into the conversations moving forward. Have a conflict between peers in your classroom and need a circle modeled for you? Just ask! Did you attend PLC in May and may be interested in leading PD for others soon? Email Fatima.
Below are links to our current "Time to Reflect" sheet and "Office Referral" documents.
Ask Yourself:
- Where is the calming area in your classroom? Do all children have access?
- Who is your buddy room to allow for breaks for you and the child?
- At what point does a child fill out a Time To Reflect sheet in your room?
- At what point do you refer a child to the office with a Referral sheet?
- At what point do you ask for Admin assistance?
Remember when an office referral is made, the office holds the right to determine consequences once discipline is handed over.
Need help with literature on bullying or friendship - see Mrs. Thorne or Mrs. Kussy!
Ask Questions
Name Feelings in Kid Language
Talk Less/Repair More
One to One - Ipads
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Is the Ipad used as a tool or toy in our classroom?
- When is work worthy enough to be shared?
- If a child has games on their Ipad that are used at home, what does the conversation sound like that these are not to be used during school hours? How can Guided Access help?
- What is something you are proud of via with Ipad use that you need to share with your team?
Consider: Multiple Ipads being used at one time can be very stimulating for both adults and students. Do children have the option to use headphones? Do they know when headphones are accessible?
Parking for Pre-School
Sub Plans
- Put your absence in Aesop as soon as you know you will be out (it can always be cancelled or changed prior to the day of).
- Have a set of at least 2 days worth of emergency plans. Talk with your teams about this.
- Make your personal sub plans easy to locate such as the bright orange folder with all building information included as well.
- Use a template that is simple and easy to follow. Need one? Ask your team.
- Include the schedule, class list of first/last names, and at least one teacher next door for help.
- Include if you have push in support, children with breaks, or any heads up that is appropriate without sharing confidential information.
- Make sure directions regarding procedures, getting class attention, attendance, and radio use is clear and at the top of your template with the schedule.
