February 2018 Edition
Vision Statement
Cabell will be a premier 21st century school that nurtures the needs of the whole child in a personalized learning environment.
Principal's Corner with Mr. Hypolite
Parents, community partners and well-wishers,
This Monday, February 12th, we will celebrate 100 days of school! In these 100 days, we saw our school strengthened its partnership with the community to provide our students with exceptional opportunities of learning with a focus on the whole child. Through our Reading Buddies program in partnership with Hockaday, we saw double figure percentage point gains in math for some of our 4th graders. Our students in 1st - 3rd grade in the CAR program are becoming stronger readers as they move up a reading level as measured by Istation. Our students in fourth and fifth grade are developing their leadership skills, setting SMART goals and gaining self-confidence through the CLAY Leadership program spearheaded by member of the Chapel Hill Methodist church.
The second week of February in our school is considered as "Random Acts of Kindness Week". As a school we have been the recipient of on many occasions random acts of kindness from our community and partners for which we are eternally grateful. Last year our students raised over $2000.00 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This year they have similar goals. Through this experience our students are now on the other side, and are learning to be kind and compassionate. They are learning the value of things, not the price.

Perot Museum of Nature and Science is coming to Cabell!!!
On Tuesday, the 13th February, from 6-8 pm, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science will be coming with amazing activities to Cabell. All are welcome, and it is free. Some of the highlights will be:
Stomp Rockets – Engineering; Force and Motion
Design a paper rocket to fly using our compressed air launchers. After testing, modify your creation to make it fly even farther! (take home)
Wind Tube – Engineering; Force and Motion
Engineer a flying object made from recycled materials and test it our wind tube. (take home)
Robot Zoo (Ozobots, Beebots, Spheros) – Robotics, Coding
Practice coding using a variety of different robots! Program these color-sensing Ozobots through drawing! Create mazes for them to follow and watch them respond to specific color combinations by performing different tricks. Use pushbuttons to guide Beebots to reach different destinations on our map and a special app to program our Spheros.
Gravity Racers – Engineering; Force and Motion
Learn about gravity and Newton’s Laws of Motion as you compete to build the fastest racer using recycled materials in this twist on the classic pinewood derby racer project. (take home)
Giant Engineering – Engineering; Architecture
Work together to build the largest structure possible using our special straw building kits as you explore principles of architecture and engineering.
Makey Makey – Electronics/Circuits
Play a variety of homemade games powered by Makey Makey, a circuit board that allows you to control almost any software on your computer. Learn how you can make your own games, inventions, and more at home using this affordable piece of hardware.
Make sure you come to join the fun. All our girls and boys will be thrilled. Activities suitable for all grade levels.
Making Math Fun
During winter kids can't play outside as often. Instead of screens, here are some fun and educational math games to play with your children.
Make 10: Addition & Subtraction
The object of the game is to make as many equations as possible in which the sum equals 10. Start with a complete deck of cards. Ace = 1, Joker = 0 and all other face cards are removed. Begin by placing the deck face down on the table. Each player chooses 5 cards and places the cards in front of them.
The first player uses the 5 cards to create as many equations as she can in which the sum equals ten. For example, If I have 9, 9, 3, 2, 4, I could make the following equations: 9+4-3=10 and 9+3-2=10
After making as many equations as possible, player sets aside the used cards and play passes to the next player.
Play continues with players refilling their hands to 5 cards at the start of each turn. Whoever uses the most cards by the end of the deck wins.
Close Call: Addition, Place Value (Number Sense)
The object of this game is to accumulate the highest score by coming closer to the goal of a total sum of 100 than your opponent.
Start with a complete deck of cards. Ace = 1, Joker = 0 and all tens and other face cards are removed. Shuffle the deck and deal each player 6 cards. Players then select 4 of the 6 cards that they have been dealt to create two 2-digit numbers. The object is to create two numbers that when added together come as close to 100 as possible, without going over.
For example, in this hand I selected the cards 1, 6, 3, 6. From these digits I can create 13, 16, 31, 36, 61, 63, 66. The aim of the game is to select the two numbers that added together are closest to 100 without being larger than 100.
For each round that you win, you get one point. In the event of a tie, each player receives 1 point. After playing 5, 7 or 10 rounds, the player with the most points wins.
Race to $1.00
A selection of coins that includes at least two of each of the following: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, along with a pencil and paper, and some container to pick them from such as a bag. More coins tend to be more fun! The goal of these games is to practice counting and adding coins to reach $1.00.
Place all of the coins into a bag and shake. The first round of the game starts by having each player blindly pick a coin at random from the bag. Each player then draws this coin on their sheet of paper. Once everyone has done this, then everyone picks another coin and draws it on their paper and so on. Each player needs to keep a running total of how much money they have picked from the bag. The first player to reach $1.00 accurately wins the round. You can play multiple rounds, and the one to win the most out of 3, 5, or 7 rounds wins the game.
