The Compass Rose: 3/3
Principal's Message
To the East Elementary School community:
With March comes preparation for many important spring processes- MCAS, classroom placement, Kindergarten Screening, and this year, potential impacts from the budget process. We will be providing students, and families, with exposure to MCAS materials via tutorials and practice sessions, all with the goal of allowing our students to be comfortable with navigating the test and ensuring they can focus on content rather than the mechanics of the test. Soon (likely the first week of April), parents will receive a form to provide information that may be helpful to our classroom placement process (taking place throughout the month of May). Lastly, we'll be holding Kindergarten Screening here on May 16th, and details will be sent out ahead of that event.
- Mr. Hawes
Smartwatches/Apple Watches
Parents, please partner with us in upholding the expectations for the use of electronic devices throughout the school day. Over the first few weeks of school, we have been aware of instances in which students are using cell phones or smartwatches to speak directly with parents about the status of their day or how they're feeling.
While understandably comforting for some, it is not an opportunity that all students have and is not in line with our expectations outlined in our Student Handbook (Pg 24: https://hinghamschools.org/east-elementary-school/files/2022/09/Elementary-Handbook-2022-2023.pdf)
If student concerns require immediate adult attention, students should utilize the staff available to them and we'll ensure they get the help/support they need.
DESE District & School Report Cards
Each year, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education provides families with district and school report cards designed to show families how the district and individual schools are performing. Please see the attached letter, which includes links to our report cards and information about our performance:
Makerspace Materials Needed!
Parents, please think of us when changing your next paper towel or toilet paper roll! Our Makerspace team is in need of cardboard paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls for their next project. If you're able to save them, please send them in with your student. There will be a collection box in the Main Office.
Thank you in advance!
School Council
Parents, we have an opportunity to add to our School Council. A recently vacated seat provides us the ability to add up to two parent representatives to our Council. This group, comprised of parents, School Committee liaisons, educators, and community representatives meets monthly to review school happenings (MCAS, All-School Meeting topics, curriculum content, enrichment) and to both develop and report out on School Improvement goals and initiatives.
If you're interested, please complete the following form: https://forms.gle/1aFWCrJZUhxCAhFXA
If there are multiple interested parents, candidates will be balloted via forms in backpacks after vacation.
Updated Physicals & Related Documentation
Parents of Grade 4 students, please be sure to send an updated physical examination form from your pediatrician to Mrs. Shanahan, our school nurse. This is a requirement from the state of MA. Any physical examination done between March 2022 to March 2023 is acceptable.
World Language Week
March 5-11 is World Language Week. If you want to read a little more about what this week is and how it started check out the Alpha Mu Gamma website: https://www.amgnational.org/national-foreign-language-week.html
At East School we would like to celebrate this week by talking about different languages and cultural traditions associated with those languages relevant to our school community.
Senora Jauregui would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill out this google form to help shape the information we will share with our students.
Please submit your answer by March 1st, thank you in advance for your help: https://forms.gle/dbgjCftUXUgnoSFCA

Green Team
The Green Team is very excited about the success we've had with the launch of our lunchtime recycling program this week but we're realizing that we need another round of parent volunteers next week as well to keep up our progress. The students have been so receptive to our new recycling system but we would love to give them an extra week of hands-on guidance figuring out what gets placed where to really help their new habits stick. Please use the link below to sign up for a shift as a cafeteria helper if you are able!
