Necessities of gothic literature
1. Nighttime Action
Seeks to discover secrets in a supernatural, mysterious environment - atmosphere of suspense.
2. Curses and Supernatural events
ghosts, doors opening by themselves, etc. Women who are frightened or confused, wandering around and/or suffering and dying from some inexplicable illness
3. Psychology - Intense emotion
terror, insanity, a sense of impending doom, obsessive love
4. Damsel in Distress
Most Gothic stories have aa young (often beautiful) maiden who is rescued... sometimes
5. Setting: Remote Location
Large old houses, usually family estates (America didn't have the castles England does) something scary (unexplained events, deaths, legends) happened at the house in the past or happens throughout the story.
