FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

Greetings Waterford!

December has arrived and amid all of the holiday-themed chaos, we are still hard at work ensuring that your children are learning, creating, and celebrating our traditions. We will have several Winter Concerts this month, as well as activities in and out of school. Please refer to the 'Monthly Events' flyer that was sent home last week. A few examples of our students continuing to shine is their participation in the National Hour of Code and helping those in need withing our community.

As always, we thank you for all that you do for our schools and for supporting our mission to ensure that all learners be prepared for life.

I wish you a warm, happy, and healthy holiday season.

Yours in Education,

Jay Eitner

Superintendent of Schools

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT ATCO?

Atco Elementary School highlighted two special days during the month of November. In recognition of Veteran's Day our school community held an assembly on November 10th acknowledging family members who served our country in the Armed Forces. Several veterans attended our assembly and were greeted with patriotic songs and a special presentation. The assembly was very well done and touching for those who were present. You can view the presentation at https://goo.gl/2XTqP9.

In addition, November 24th represented the 50th day of school. To celebrate this milestone, the students and teachers of Atco Elementary dressed in 50’s attire and participated in a variety of activities popular during that era. The children rounded out the day dancing to the music of the 1950's at their very own sock hop!! Check out this amazing video put together by Mrs. Power highlighting the day!

November tends to be a challenging month with its half days, holidays and conferences, but Atco Elementary School keeps the children focused and moving forward, by seizing every opportunity to make learning fun!

AND AT TR?

The month of November seems to come and go quickly year after year. This month, we welcomed families into our classrooms during American Education Week. Thank you to all families who were able to attend. We are proud of the work we do in the classroom, and we hope you were able to get a snapshot of your child's daily routines and the instruction that our teachers work so hard to craft. Teaching is more than just standing in front of a classroom and directing students what to do. We are aiming to teach children how to think critically, how to be independent learners, and how to work through challenges.

As the holiday season continues, our job tends to become more challenging as the excitement builds for each child and we have less time to accomplish all we'd like to get done. In early November, our students were introduced to two new online-learning resources which can be utilized at home.

Our new Math initiative, ST Math, is a brain-based program that challenges students to think outside the box, but at the same time meets students at their level of performance. All of our children have a username and password and know each. Children can access ST Math from home.

Our new Language Arts resource is called MYON and it is a supplemental reading program that is also accessible to children at home. Each child has a username and password and individualized reading libraries can be created for your learner.

We ask that you encourage your child to spend time on each program to reinforce and advance learning that takes place within the classroom. Below are two links that will provide you with an overview of information for each program.

Thank you for your support and as always, we are here to partner with you in assisting your children in gaining a quality education.
