Principal's Message


Arroyo Families,


You have persevered and made it through the first month of school! We appreciate your commitment to learning the new digital platforms, schedules, and resources that we will be using during this time of Online Learning. I know that this hasn't been easy and I'm immensely proud of parents, caregivers, students, support staff, and teachers. We will continue to partner together to provide the best education possible for our Arroyo students. Please take some time to read through the important information in this newsletter below. If you need assistance at any time, please call the office at 909-985-1012 from 8:00 AM-3:30 PM. Our technology and support team members are here to assist. Attendance, Participation, and Assignment Requirements during Online Learning

School districts across the state are required to follow legislation outlined in Senate Bill 98 to provide a rigorous academic experience (just as students would receive if they were at school) during this time of distance learning. This means that attendance and participation are required every school day for every student.


Beginning September 1, teachers are required to complete daily attendance, participation, and work completion records for every student. Please help us by ensuring that your child is participating in all required Zoom meetings and completing and submitting all assignments each day. Below are some guidelines and tips for this important learning:


  • Students should participate daily in all live Zoom sessions (synchronous learning)
  • Students should login on time (a few minutes early is recommended) and remain on for each full session with video on
  • Complete all assigned independent work each day (asynchronous learning) which includes assignments given by teacher and iReady ELA & Math program participation
  • Teachers have open office hours from 2:00-2:30 on Tues/Thurs/Fri if your child needs help with independent work
  • Total learning time each day for both synchronous and asynchronous assignments must total a minimum of the following instructional minutes: 240 minutes for 4th-6th Grades; 230 minutes for 1st-3rd Grades; and 180 minutes for TK/K

Tips for Distance Learning Success

1. Find a quiet learning space with chair and table/desk

2. Login to Zooms a few minutes early; set alarm on phone as a reminder

3. Have all learning materials ready

4. Check Google Classroom daily for independent assignments and submit them once complete

5. Keep drinks and food away from Chromebook

6. Wear earbuds or headphones to reduce background noise and increase focus

7. Keep toys and other items away from learning area

8. For family privacy and to minimize distractions in the online classroom, consider where background video is facing (sit with Chromebook video facing a wall instead of living spaces)

9. During break times, take a break from screen time and get moving instead

10. Get enough sleep (9-11 hours per night for elementary students); establish routine bedtimes and wake times

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Lessons

The unprecedented times in which we now live have presented a unique opportunity for schools to address not only core academic skills, but also those life skills that promote the health and wellbeing of students. To this end, the Ontario Montclair school district will begin embedding Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) instruction into the online learning environment. Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (casel.org).


The five SEL competencies are: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making. Each SEL competency will be targeted over the course of two months. The 15-minute daily SEL lessons, will be presented at the beginning of the school day, and will include a daily check-in and guided activity.


During the months of August and September, your child will be learning about Self-Awareness. Through a variety of activities, including positive class team building, virtual group activities, and independent reflection, students will begin to better understand their emotions and thoughts, and how they influence their own behaviors.


Research shows that students participating in SEL have improved academic and behavioral outcomes and are also less likely to act out in delinquent or disruptive ways. SEL instruction supports school connectedness and provides students with the skills necessary to succeed in school and throughout their lives.

The thinker attribute helps our students overcome challenges and make informed decisions even without face-to-face teacher support.


When working with your student at home, ask them some of the following questions:
