Mitchell County is located in the Mountain region approximately 50 miles northeast of Asheville and 25 miles southeast of Johnson City, Tennese, at 36°0′50″N 82°9′21″W (36.014002, -82.155695)

What Year Was This County Founded?

Mitchell county was founded back in 1861.

How did Mitchell County get it's name?

It was Named for Elisha Mitchell, Professor of Mathematics, Chemistry, Geology, & Mineralogy at UNC from 1818 until his death. First scientist to argue that a nearby peak was the highest point east of the Mississippi river
