Helpful Tips about Santa's Breakfast from PTO
We need a lot of elves to make this breakfast a success!! Can you give 30 min? Please sign up and be on Santa’s nice list! There’s a place for your 4th and 5th graders ( and older bluff park student alumni!) to help out too! https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/4090f4ca9ab28a7f85-santas3
Some helpful tips!
- 2nd and 3rd perform at 8:30, K and 1st perform at 9:30. Parking can be tight so make sure to allow plenty of time! We will be running the shuttle from Shades Crest Baptist this year so that’s a great new option! Doors open at 7:45.
- Santa will be there for pictures and we will have some fun games set up in the gym, fun for the entire family!
- You do not have to purchase a breakfast to attend! Please come see our sweet babies sing no matter if you decide to dine with us or not!
Flu Season
We are approaching flu season. Currently our school is not seeing many cases of the flu. However, we have started monitoring numbers daily. Please partner with us, as you monitor your children when they have symptoms of illness, to be sure that they do not attend school while they have fever. Common flu symptoms include:
Fever or feeling feverish/chills.(Temp of 100.0 or above)
Cough.
Sore throat.
Runny or stuffy nose.
Muscle or body aches.
Headaches.
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
.
The Alabama Department of Public Health urges the general public to follow these actions to avoid getting and spreading the flu:
* Stay at home if you have a fever, and for at least 24 hours post fever without fever-reducing
* Wash your hands often
* Cover your cough and sneeze
* Clean and disinfect your environment
* Consider getting the flu vaccine
Parents, please notify the school nurse if your child has been diagnosed by a physician with the flu. You may call the Health Room at 439-2830 or email Nurse Melanie at mjourdan@hoover.k12.al.us to report any cases.

Spanish with Senora Gaines
Hola mi familia de Bluff Park. In all my classes, we decorated an ‘arbol de Navidad’ in class. We put on a star (estrella), lights (luces), ornaments (adornos), candy canes (bastones de caramelo) and presents underneath (regalos). My 3rd, 4th and 5th grade amigos also listened to a story about the Hombre de Jengibre (Gingerbread Man) and drew their own as well as described him/her. They may have brought these papers home. On the back is an ‘Hombre de Jengibre’ with parts labeled. My Kindergarten amigos also acted out the story in class. My 1st and 2nd grade amigos decorated the tree and participated in a calendar story about a donkey named Arturo who is getting ready to celebrate his holiday.
Our ‘frase de semana’ is No es justo. [no-ehs-hoos-toe] = It’s not fair. Again, I can tell some of my friends are definitely practicing outside of class. I always love to hear of my students using their Spanish at home or with family.
Gracias for all you do.
Profesora Melany Gaines
From the Counselor
We are still learning about the Zones of Regulation. The kids are really picking it up and having fun with it. We are really working on the red zone and what gets us in the red zone. Once we have our list of things or problems that get us in the red zone we discuss what size the problem is by using bowling pins. 3-5 grade has had great discussions this week on determining what is a 4 pin problem vs a 3 or 2.
4 Pin Problem-Huge Problem (Red Zone)
3 Pin Problem- Large (Red Zone)
2 Pin Problem- Medium (Yellow Zone)
1 Pin Problem- Small (Yellow Zone)
Gutter Ball- No Problem (Green Zone)
The rest of the month we are going to be discussing different coping strategies or calm down techniques. Attached here is a list of coping strategies to use at home and a journal to talk and rate how each strategy works.
