Dred Scott
Dred Scott was born in 1799 and died on September 17th 1858. He attempted to sue for his and his wife's freedom in 1857 during the Dred Scott vs. Sandford case. He sued because he was still enslaved despite living on free land. The Supreme Court decided against Scott's claim. This case enraged many Northerns.

Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry is an area in West Virginia that John Brown, an abolitionist, raided on October 16th 1859. John Brown hoped to cause the state to rebel when he took an arsenal of weapons. Brown's raid had 20 people in it and when they tried to start a rebellion Robert E. Lee fought against them with his 88 soldiers. Lee won the battle and John Brown was sentenced to death.
