JUAN DIEGO ACADEMY OCTOBER 27, 2015
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Thank you parents for a wonderful field trip to the Pumpkin Patch. We are now planning another family event in November. We would like for you to mark your calendars on Nov. 20th. We will be having our Kinder, Pre-K 3 and 4 Thanksgiving Feast. We need parents to help man some food stations helping the kids prepare the menu for their feast. Parents will be needed for a 1/2 day of volunteer fun starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m.
Our first note will ask for parents to sign-up to volunteer. This note goes home next week.
The second note will let you know what food donation your family has been assigned to bring and if you are helping what food station you have been assigned. Lots more information to come!
Halloween Party: Thank you to those parents willing to donate something to our party menu. REMEMBER NO HALLOWEEN COSTUMES ALLOWED AT SCHOOL. However, we will be wearing our Spider hats and capes we are making in class.
November 9th there will be an assembly by students K-8th to celebrate Veteran's Day.
If you have pictures of Service members in uniform that are members of your family, please send them to school. They will be scanned and shown on a big screen as each class sings the military song for each branch of the armed forces.
We will take care of your pictures and make sure they are returned to you. The assembly starts at 2 p.m. Our Pre-K Classes will be in the audience and parents are welcomed to park out by the cul-de-sac in front of the school and come up to the auditorium to be part of the audience.
There is no school on November 11th.

Center-based learning:
This week the children worked at an art table curling 8 legs for their spider hat. At another station, the children reviewed the 5 senses vocabulary with experiments that required the use of each of their senses. We also worked on painting some small pumpkins that the teachers provided for each child. They worked on tracing numbers and building numbers with playdough.
Estrellita: In our phonics lessons this week we introduced 3 new letter sounds. We used objects and letter cards to teach the sounds you hear in (queso/cheese), (silent h in hoja), and (zapato/shoe).
Religion:
Review of “Our Father” – “El Padre Nuestro”.
We will talk about God keeps his promises. We will read when Mary and Joseph took Baby Jesus to the Temple, where two holy people named Simeon and Anna recognized Jesus as the Messiah.
Next Monday we will be talking about "All Souls Day" and attend Mass.
Homework: We accidentally sent home a pumpkin investigation form. We actually worked on this in class this week. On Monday, we carved our class pumpkin. We talked about the parts of the pumpkin and learned the names of pulp-pulpa, skin-cascara and semilla-seed. We found out how many seeds our pumpkin had: 437! We drew our pumpkin with triangular eyes, nose and smiley smile. We used unifix cubes to measure how tall our pumpkin was: 19 cubes tall. We counted the lines on the outside of the skin of the pumpkin and counted: 17. We then lit a candle inside the pumpkin and sang our pumpkin song in a dark rooooooooom!!! They loved it! We plan to cook the pulp and make a pumpkin pie closer to our Thanksgiving Feast.
Have a wonderful weekend!!! Happy Halloween!!! Stay healthy everyone!
Sincerely, Sra. Farias, Sra. Raquel and Sra. Laura
