Jovanotti - Piove + Testo
Observations about this song: This song reminds me of Manu Chao, a world beat artist from France that I like a lot. Manu Chao's songs are in English, French, Spanish and Italian. Jovanotti has a much more distinctly Italian identity. I found this song on Youtube by searcing for "Jovanotti". I was surprised by how many recordings Jovanotti had on youtube so I looked him up on Wikepedia and see he has 12 CDs out from 1988 to 2011. This led to the discovery that Jovanotti has political and professional connections with both Bono and Michael Franti. He has worked on charity projects with both of these artists!
(Watch a film in Italian)
Italian Film: Mi Piace Lavorare (I Like Working) This film has is about a real phenomenon that occurs in Italy; as companies downsize they try to pressure employs into quitting by making their jobs intolerable. They save money by having employees quit rather firing them. The protagonist in this film is a single mother raising a spirited preteen and trying not to quit her job despite the company's extreme attempts to make her miserable. | (Make a list of new words/expressions) Parole nuove: la spesa = the shopping nessuno = nobody esasperato = exasperated lavorare = to work me piace = I like | (Make at least 3 obersvations) Osservazione: This film seemed much more "rough around the edges" then Hollywood films. This is a trend I have noticed in Italian Cinema and I found out through some basic research that Italian cinema tends to favor local actors to give its a films a more authentic feeling. This is done especially to create a "regional" feeling since local actors would speak in the local dialect and use local mannerisms. I also noticed that the way the director used light. The whole film was done in drab colors, representative of the protagonist's state of depression and oppression. The last scene, however, was filmed with light and bright clothing leaving us with a sense of a brighter more promising future. I found this to be a relief after such an intensely sad and frustrating story line. For me the closing scene saves the film. |
