A Message From Our SPG President
Dear South School Families,
The school year has already been abuzz with so much excitement and it’s only October! In honor of National Principals Month, I’d like to thank our amazing leader, Principal Butte, for all that she does for our students, teachers, staff, and parent community. Thank you Mrs. Butte for all your time and dedication to South School, we are lucky to have you as our Principal!
I hope you all enjoyed meeting with and getting to know your students’ teachers during Conference Week. We have a wonderful and caring team of educators at South and that always comes across in the conversations we have. A huge thank you to Hannah Chang and Sinem Sen for making the week extra special for our teachers and staff with amazing treats!
A few exciting events to look out for in the coming weeks:
- The Scholastic Book Fair officially kicks off with a preview for parents and 4th/5th graders at lunch today, and for everyone tomorrow! This is your chance to spend time in the library and encourage your children to explore a variety of genres and new reads. Don’t forget to set up your children’s e-wallets to make shopping easier. Thank you to our amazing Mrs. James and all the volunteers who make the book fair a success.
- South’s Movie Night is tomorrow @ 6 pm (pop into the library to check out the book fair before the movie begins)! It promises to be a memorable event for all ages and another chance for South families to gather. Please bring gently used costumes your children have outgrown to donate, and support South’s first Service Learning initiative of the year.
- Family Night is next Thurs. (10/20) @ 5 pm ~ We are so happy to celebrate this tradition with tasty food truck options for sale and of course it would not be complete without the entertaining show students love. Come for friends, dinner, books and magic!
- “Building Belonging Week” begins on Mon. (10/24) ~ We look forward to a week of activities honoring diversity and inclusion and the first "Parade of Belonging"!
- Principal’s & Superintendent’s Chat is on Tues. (10/25) @ 8:30am ~ This is an amazing chance to meet Dr. Louann Carlomagno and Mrs. Butte together for the latest news!
Halloween at South School is festive and just around the corner ~ we love to see the creative and adorable costumes, while we take into account safety and comfort. Read below for more Halloween details and prepare for a ghoulish good time!
Sending you “paws-itive” vibes =)
Nidhi Dash

Out With the Old, In With the Boo! – South Service-Learning Costume Drive
South students are invited to Marie Kondo their old costumes, for a good cause. South’s Service Learning Team is collecting gently-used costumes for Compass Family Services. Each year, Compass helps hundreds of homeless and at-risk children enjoy Halloween. Donated costumes ensure Compass’ youngest clients don’t miss out on one of childhood’s greatest joys.
If you have costumes (and/or accessories) you might be willing to donate (infant to kid sizes), please bring them to Movie Night. Place your costume (gently used/good as new, not too scary) in a plastic bag (or original packaging) and label with the type of costume and approximate age (i.e. train engineer, 3-5 yrs old).

HALLOWEEN Parade Info
This year we will have our Halloween Parade on Monday, October 31st at 2:00 pm. Students need to come to school in their costumes. Please see guidelines below:
Halloween costumes should:
- not be restrictive and should allow students to perform typical classroom and school demands (i.e. sitting in a chair or on the rug, writing, walking etc.)
- not cause disruption or distraction to the school program/child's learning in class.
- not include gory or scary make-up or contain violent imagery
- not include weapons, wands, toy weapons, or props replicating weapons to be brought to school (sorry, no lightsabers either- save these accessories for your evening fun).
- use your best parent judgment.
- allow your child to wear their face covering comfortably-any face paint should start from the upper cheeks.

Pumpkin Carving & Decorating Contest
The Great Halloween Pumpkin Carving and Decorating Contest is Coming! If you and your family love to carve or decorate pumpkins, Mrs. James hopes you will enter South's annual pumpkin extravaganza. Last year there were over 60 pumpkins brought in, showing an amazing range of creativity. Please review this year's guidelines:
- Carved/decorated pumpkin to be created by student or by student and family
- Pumpkins dropped off only in the library by 8:45am on Monday, Oct. 31st
- Pumpkins must be picked from the library by 3:30pm on Oct. 31st or they will be composted
- Students, teachers and parents may vote for 5 of their favorite pumpkins in the library before 11:00am on the 31st
- All votes must be in by 1:30pm on Oct. 31st (this gives time to count before the end of the day)
- Prizes presented to top 5 pumpkins (announced at end of school day)
- Pumpkins will be identified by number (not name); please ask your students to respect confidentiality (we don’t want this to be a popularity contest)

HCSD Building Belonging Week
October 24-28, 2022
Your family is invited to join HCSD and the IDEA Committee for Building Belonging Week, a district-wide initiative designed to enhance students’ sense of belonging in their school and community. This week-long celebration aims to honor the wonderful diversity in our school community, and help students understand their important role in making our schools feel welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Please save the morning of Tuesday, October 25th for a "Parade of Belonging" in which students and parents “parade” to school from designated nearby houses starting at ~8am. Stay tuned for more details about the week’s activities via Konstella and @hcsdideacommittee. If you would like to help out, please email: Meg Ketchersid Edgett (North), Erin Schaefer (South), or Amy Rodde (West).
IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) is a district-wide, parent-led group that supports the families, faculty, and staff of the Hillsborough City School District (HCSD) to create an environment that welcomes and is informed by diversity, fosters a sense of belonging, and prepares our students to make a positive impact on the world.
