Hello Knights Community,


What a wonderful week we had welcoming our PreK-2nd grade students back to the building last week! It was great to see so many familiar faces and meet new friends. This week we will continue along the reopening timeline and add 3-6th grade students to the hybrid learning model. This means that all students (except remote only) will be in the hybrid learning mode this week. On Monday and Tuesday, A Group students in all grade levels will be on site. On Wednesday and Thursday, B Group students in all grade levels will be on site. On Friday, everyone will learn remotely.


If you are returning to school for the first time this week, please be sure you have reviewed the reopening procedures videos that were shared last week. They are included in this week's newsletter too. We have made significant changes to arrival and dismissal that we want to make all families aware of. Also, if you have students in multiple grade levels, you will pick up all of your children in the dismissal location of the youngest child. For example, if I have a student in 4th grade and a student in Kindergarten, I would pick up both students at the Kindergarten dismissal location. We hope this makes pick up more convenient for everyone. We also ask for your patience and participation as we implement these new systems. Things are going to look a little bit different, but these measures are in place to keep our students and staff safe.


One key change we want to bring everyone's attention to is that there are no visitors at school at this time. This includes arrival and dismissal. Please do not walk your child to the door at arrival, or come to the office or front door for pick up at dismissal. All parents dropping off will need to use the car loop for arrival. If you are waiting for a student walking home, please wait at the stop sign at 68th and Caenen (the circle drive exit), to avoid crowding.


Our first week back at school was a huge success and we know that week two will be even better with more students in-person. I want to give a personal thank you our incredible staff for all of their hard work, and to our community for your ongoing partnership. We are #uKnighted512!

On Site Learning Procedures- Please View Videos Before 1st Day On Site

Playground Access

School will be in session with students on-site beginning the week of October 5. School playgrounds are closed to the general public during school hours. School playground access is reserved for students attending on-site as all safety protocols must be followed. The school playground gates will be locked during school hours and when JCPRD/YMCA have the grounds reserved.

Office Availability

Our office is open and ready to serve your family! If you need assistance, please call us at (913)993-1900. We will do our best to assist you over the phone, or we will make an appointment to assist you in person. We are working hard to keep staff and families safe and socially distanced. Therefore, appointments are required for in person visits at this time. Please call to make an appointment if you need to come into the office. If the office is busy, you may be asked to wait outside until more space is available indoors.


As we shift to in-person learning, we want to let you know that the office will be closed from 7:45-8:10AM and 3:00- 3:30PM each day unless you have an appointment. This is to help eliminate crowding and ensure social distancing during arrival and dismissal. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that you understand we are taking this precaution to keep all kids and staff safe.

COVID 19 Updates

We want to partner with our community to keep COVID-19 cases low and our schools open. We need your help to make this happen. Please view the Student Daily COVID-19 Self Assessment below. Please review the symptoms of COVID-19 and keep your child at home if you see these symptoms. If you aren't sure if you should keep your child home for the day, give us a call in the office and we will put you in touch with a school nurse for guidance. We also ask that you let us know if your child has been exposed to or tested positive for COVID-19 so we can take proper sanitizing actions and quarantine any necessary staff or peers. We know it is inconvenient, but we hope that by working together we can keep our community healthy and our schools open.

Canvas Troubleshooting Tips

When you are having trouble with your iPad, the first step to try to fix any problem is to do a hard reset on your iPad. This can be done by holding the home button and the power button at the same time until the screen becomes black and an apple appears on the screen.


If you are struggling with the Canvas app, we’ve figured out that sometimes, for whatever reason, the app does not function properly. Until it is working normally, try following these steps to access your teacher’s Canvas page:


  • Access Canvas through the web instead of the app. Go to Safari and type in https://smsd.instructure.com/
  • You may need to search Shawnee Mission School District Student
  • Then type in your student’s studentnumber@smsd.org followed by Knights123!
  • We hope the helpful tips my save everyone some headaches.


If Canvas "disappears" from the iPad...

  1. go to Manager app
  2. Manager will prompt you with: “activation authentication needed”
  3. enter student # and confirm.
  4. apps on iPad should start to reappear, but may take a few minutes to load.
  5. You will probably need to go into Settings and turn on Location Services under privacy

Tech Tips

  1. If you're having slow internet or connectivity issues at home, consider putting devices that are not currently in active internet usage into Airplane Mode. When you do that, think of it like that device 'taking off' from your 'internet runway' which makes more room for other devices to land safely and move smoothly from place to place. When you need that device again, simply turn off Airplane Mode and bring that device back in for a landing on your internet air strip. There you are! Yet another job title for you this year....Internet Air Traffic Controller.
  2. Also...if your child is having difficulty opening, saving or sharing items in Canvas or other platforms, they may need to re-enter their password stored in the device.
  3. As always, clearing the cards (double click on the home button and swipe up on each card) or Powering Off and Restarting the device are a great place to begin when troubleshooting your own tech issues.
  4. Last, WebEx takes a lot of processing power; therefore, if you are charging the device with WebEx running you will not see an increase in battery life as WebEx is taking all the charge that the device is gaining (net zero).

Halloween @ School

Due to safety concerns related to the COVID 19 Pandemic, we will not host Halloween parties in any Shawnee Mission schools this year. This means that we will not be welcoming visitors to the building for our annual parties or parade. Costumes also cannot be worn to school. We are sad to be missing out on this annual tradition, but we know that the safety of our community is the priority.


Even though we can't celebrate as we normally would, it's still Halloween and we know how exciting this day is for kids. This year, Halloween just happens to be on a Saturday. So we are going to celebrate "The Night Before Halloween" on Friday 10/30. Dr. Gonser will do a read aloud of the book The Night Before Halloween for the whole school, and we will have a school-wide PJ day! Classrooms will also have some fun activities for students. Although it's not our typical Halloween celebration, we know it will still be a fun day together.

Butter Braids are Back!

Our PTA's biggest fundraiser is kicking off! Based on the success of the past three years, we will again be selling Butter Braid pastries. This is our ONLY "selling" fundraiser of the year, so we hope your child will participate. The products truly sell themselves, and since Butter Braids are only available through fundraisers, many people look forward to purchasing them from year to year! We have some fun incentives for grade levels, classes, and individual sellers including extra recesses, choice time in PE, lunch with your teacher and principal, concretes from Culver’s, gift cards to Dave & Buster’s, Applebee’s, IHOP, and more! All students are eligible for the prize drawing for every 5 items sold.

Order forms will be coming home with your student in the next few days. Forms and money are due back to school on October 28, and order pick-up is on November 11 at Benninghoven from 3:15 - 5:45. Art Opportunity

The Johnson County Election Office is inviting Shawnee Mission School District students to be a part of the election process by providing artwork to display in advance voting locations. Beginning Saturday, October 17, Johnson County will open advance voting locations throughout the county to serve the many thousands of voters wishing to cast their ballots before Election Day. What that artwork looks like is entirely up to the imaginations and creativity of each student artist. The only requirement is that the artwork not be for or against any particular candidate. Instead, artwork should be focused on voting and encouraging people to vote. The artwork can be original, but if you have access to pre-made coloring sheets that would meet the non-partisan criteria, we would be fine with that as well.

Submissions would need to be received by October 14 in order to be displayed on the opening day. Students wishing to participate can mail their artwork to the Johnson County Election Office or have parents drop them in the drop boxes at the Election Office.

Artwork must be non-partisan and must not be for or against any particular candidate.
Artwork must be labeled on the back with the required information listed below.

Bus Info

Student Bus Information

For those students enrolled for the bus via DS Bus Lines, student bus numbers and pick up/drop off information are available to families in Skyward Family Access. Please login to your Family Access account and select the Busing tab for information. If you do not have bus information for your child in Skyward, you may not have completed enrollment for transportation and should contact DS Bus Lines (913.384.1190).

Bus Enrollment

New this year, ALL families who want their children to receive bus service must enroll via DS Bus Lines. This includes those that qualify for free busing by residing over the state designated 2.5 miles from school.

Families who qualify for free/reduced lunches may contact DS Bus Lines to arrange enrollment. Bus fees will be prorated for the days that district is in remote attendance per JCDHE gating criteria.
