A Note from the PUSD Attendance Department
We are thankful!
As we prepare to take a short break from school for Thanksgiving, we want to express our gratitude for everyone who makes it possible for as many students as possible to come to school every day, on time, ready to learn. We thank:
- Our students and families for making daily attendance a priority since they know the habit of attendance will help them do well in the classroom and eventually in a job.
- Our wonderful teachers who pour their energy into making each classroom an exciting place for exploration and knowledge so children do not want to miss out on learning
- Our support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need
We especially appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking extra days off during the Thanksgiving holiday. Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and leave your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!

Adopt-a-Family Info and Signup Links
It is that wonderful time of year when we begin to celebrate the holidays and traditions with our families. Our traditions may vary, but one thing that has brought us together as a community, has been assisting those in need. Park Village has a rich heritage of spreading JOY to many families in our PUSD community who need a helping hand during the holidays. This year we have the opportunity to bless others once again, through the PUSD Adopt-a-Family program. Each grade has adopted one family. Click on your grade to view the sign up for your family.
Sign up and take advantage of Black Friday sales. Please bring all donations to your classroom by Friday, December 7, 2018. Thank you for your generosity! Contact Angie Hoar (Program Chair) at angiehoar@gmail.com or 619-838-0343 with any questions.

Counselor’s Corner
William Damon, author of The Moral Child, tells us that “forming a moral identity is a lifetime journey that evolves from a variety of sources such as receiving feedback, observing others that inspire of appall, reflecting on our experience and responding to cultural influences such as family, school, religious institutions, and the mass media.” The title of Chaper 2 of Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World by Michelle Borba is “Empathetic Children Have A Moral Identity”.
In this chapter we learn ways of teaching children to develop an ethical code. As a thirteen year old, Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, watched an NBC news report, of 38 people witnessing a vicious assault on the streets of New York where no one came to the help of a women. No one wanted to get involved. (Captain) Sully vowed at the time never to let that happen in his life. If he was ever in a situation where someone, such as Kitty Genovese, needed help, he would choose to act. Years later, as the pilot of an airplane, he miraculously landed his disabled plane in the Hudson River and saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew. This was his way to stay true to his pledge as a young boy. He has a strong responsibility to others. His moral code was based on social responsibility and helping others.
This chapter tells us how to create a family mantra to boost kids’ moral identities. Below are suggestions:
- Call a family meeting in which you conceive, construct and put in a public place a written ideal of what you want your family to be. Taken from the book entitled: The Secrets of Happy Families by Bruce Feiler. Make it fun with food and games.
- Discuss rules of everyone listening and who you are as a family. Questions might include: What do we stand for? What kind of family do we want to become? What principles so we want to follow? How do we want to give back to others? And How can we make our world a better place?
- Identify your core values. What are the virtues or character traits you want to instill?
- Create a motto or family mantra – a short phrase that best describes your family. Example: “We are kind even when no one is looking.” “Our purpose is to care.” etc.
Things to know about developing moral identities: Moral identity can inspire empathy, activate compassion, and motivate caring behavior. To respond empathetically, kids must value other people’s thought and feelings. When a child can imagine himself as a caring person, he is more likely to care about others.
As parents we have such a great responsibility to our children and the world. Have courage and be the best parent you can be.
