What's New at Walnut?

Principal's Message

Hello, Wildcat Families!

I hope you have all had a refreshing summer. I'm feeling recharged and excited about the first day of school school two weeks from today on Wednesday, August 18th! It has been a joy to make plans for students to return to a full-day of instruction on campus, including plans for specialists like art, PE, music, and dance. Walnut PTA is also hard at work brainstorming school events and assemblies. I know I will never take these basic school functions for granted again!

Of course, it is our top priority to provide a safe and nurturing environment for students. You should have all received CVUSD's Family Resource Guide which includes general safety measures at all of our sites. You can find the CVUSD Forward website by going to the Walnut website: conejousd.org/walnut As we get closer to the first day of school, I will send you the latest information about what to expect at Walnut. I am hesitant to do so now, as we all know things can change. At this point, the basics include masks indoors for all students and staff, screening at home rather than on campus, frequent handwashing, and staying home if you have viral symptoms and/or a fever of 99.5 degrees or higher. Please send your child to school each day wearing a mask. Current guidelines allow them to remove their masks for recess, outdoor PE, and lunch.

We will be going back to our previous school schedule:

  • School starts for all grades at 8:15 a.m. Gates open at 7:45 a.m.
  • TK and K dismiss at 1:20 p.m. each day
  • Grades 1-5 are dismissed at 2:40 p.m. each day other than Wednesdays, which has early dismissal at 1:30 p.m. PLEASE NOTE THAT SINCE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS A WEDNESDAY, STUDENTS IN GRADES 1-5 WILL BE DISMISSED AT 1:30 PM.

Walnut staff will be welcoming students back the first several days of school by focusing on activities that build community and emotional safety. We want students to develop friendships, grow in confidence, and experience the fun of learning. At Walnut, we know we are STRONGER TOGETHER!

Look for more information to come from me over the next two weeks.

Kind Regards, Mrs. Aileen Wall

Find Out Your Child's Teacher & Classroom on Tuesday, August 17th at 3:00 p.m.

Barring any changes in public health rules, we will be resuming our Walnut tradition of welcoming families to visit campus the afternoon before school starts. From 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 8/17, our office staff will be out front to pass out individual cards with the teacher name and room assignment for each student. Due to confidentiality regulations, we will no longer post class lists. Representatives from Walnut PTA will also be present to introduce themselves, pass out information about membership and spirit wear, and give POPSICLES to children who attend.

If you are not able to make it to campus between 3-4 p.m., don't worry. Later that evening, teacher assignments will be sent out via email. Friendly staff members will also be available to help students find their classrooms on the first day of school--August 18th.

Walnut Elementary School

Walnut is a neighborhood school with a BIG heart, where every student is valued and encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child, so we invest in the visual and performing arts, technology, and physical fitness in addition to traditional academics. We were recently one of five schools in Ventura County named as a California Honor Roll School. We are committed to our mission statement, Academic Excellence for All in a Safe, Enriching Environment. Walnut has an active PTA, School Site Council, and English Language Advisory Council. Each of these groups of parents and community members would LOVE to have YOU join them in making sure Walnut provides the best possible learning environment for students and families. Please contact us if you'd like to know more. --Mrs. Wall, Principal
