Principal's Message

Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,

Our staff has been working hard and preparing for Excellent Distance Teaching and Learning. Incredibly, our first day of school is this Wednesday, August 19th! I am optimistic that it will be a great year. Indeed, I want to encourage all staff, parents, and community members to model both optimism and calmness for all of our students and children during this pandemic and unprecedented time in our history. Our goals remain the same around promoting bilingualism, multiculturalism, and building community. We understand that parents and the community want more live interactions with their teachers in order to better engage and support students during Distance Learning. This year's Distance Learning schedule provides for many more live interactions with the teachers(synchronous learning) throughout the school day via Google Meets than last Spring. All students will start the day together in a whole class meeting of 15-20 minutes. This first Meet is when teachers will take Attendance, go over a Morning Message, and do Social Emotional Learning lessons. After that whole class meeting, students then break into Cohort smaller groups and switch between synchronous and asynchronous learning. While one group meets with the teacher for live instruction and support in a Meet, the other Cohort works on Asynchronous learning activities like reading, writing, Math problems or games, apps like RAZ-kids or Dreambox, and other projects the teachers will assign. All grade levels have also established the last part of the day for Office Hours to further support individual or small groups of students. We understand that this is much more rigorous than last Spring and we will be monitoring and possibly making changes depending on how things develop. Due to the amount of preparation required to teach this way, the teachers will have one planning day a week when they do no meet with the students. However, Subdirectora Leslie and I will be setting up grade level Meets with ALL students on these days to check in and provide some enrichment activities. This Friday(August 21st) is the first prep day for teachers and I will be sending you out the Google Meet links for those grade level meetings Leslie and I will be conducting. Starting the second week of school, the teacher preparation day will always be on Wednesdays. A reminder that the district has set up an informational resource for parents and the community on the district web page called the Roadmap to Reopening of Schools. They will be hosting a Webinar to support parents with technology and important Applications/Platforms like Clever, Google Classroom, and SeeSaw on Tuesday, August 18th:

The district is finalizing a Parent's Guide to Distance Learning and have scheduled a parent Webinar to review the guide for August 24th(link TBD). Below is a guide for getting started with the district provided devices:

If you have not done so already, I encourage you to complete the Back to School Update(about which the school district has already sent you an email) as we need accurate and up to date address, email, and cell phone information for each family. We also need all families to complete the Free and Reduced Lunch Application Form to qualify for free or reduced priced meals for your children. Our Unidos PTO has set up a Back to School/Virtual MAZE day on the Unidos WebPage and Membership Toolkit where all families can access virtually what we normally would provide at the MAZE day. For example, you can complete the Unidos Membership Toolkit, purchase school spirit clothing, sign up to volunteer for School Site Council, English Language Advisory, and Art in Action volunteer opportunities(which will be virtual as well). It is also important to try and make a donation to Unidos PTO (of which we are all members) as the funding goes to support all students at our school! Unidos has also set up a raffle to encourage everyone to complete this information by 5:00pm this Tuesday, August 18th: Five families will be chosen to win raffle prizes ranging from $10 gift cards from Starbucks to a $50 gift card from Target. Reminder that if you did not come do the Drive Through MAZE today to get your district provided device, school supplies/tool kits, and turn in your lunch form and emergency card you may do so tomorrow Tuesday, August 18th Last Names A-L 9:00-11:30; Last Names M-Z 12:00-3:30pm. Please wear a mask, stay in your car, place a sign in your car window with your child's complete name, grade level, and homeroom teacher's name.

Student breakfast and lunch drive through pickup will begin Mon, Tues, and Wed starting Aug 19. Students will need a Student ID to pick up meals. 11:30-12:30 and 3:30-4:30 are the pick up times for Adelante Selby families. Learn more here

School Name, Mascot, Dress Code

Dr. Baker and the School Board did approve Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School as the final name for our school. Our next step is to order and install a new marquee sign for the front of the school and signage throughout the site. We will also work through the School Site Council on a school mascot. I know many of you suggested and liked the idea of the Alebrije which is a mythical creature from Mexican folklore that is part Jaguar and part Eagle(and was seen in the popular children's movie, "Coco"). However, we will still need to go through a process for finalizing our school mascot. Our school dress code from last year will remain in effect this year for when we return to "live" at school instruction learning. In the meantime, during the Live Google Meets with the teachers during Distance Learning please make sure your child is dressed appropriately and not eating food or chewing gum.

Office Hours

Our school office will be open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00am-4:00pm. Please call to make an appointment if you need help. All staff and visitors to campus must:

  • wear a mask
  • use hand disinfectant when entering the office
  • have your temperature taken in the office at the kiosk so we can screen you
  • complete the visitor Wellness Screening From using the QR code in the office
  • keep 6 feet of social distancing at all times


Please note that due to COVID-19, yearbook printing and distribution was delayed. Yearbooks for the 2019-20 school year will be delivered in the second week of September. We will be sending out information about picking up your yearbook and the distribution date(s) as soon as they arrive at the school. A big virtual ABRAZO(hug) and SHOUTOUT to parent Penny Cifuentes volunteer work on the Yearbook!

Please note that the school playgrounds(including play structures and swings) and field are closed. The general public should not be on the school campus.
