Heartfelt Appreciation to our West Cypress Hills Volunteers

On behalf of all of our West Cypress Hills Elementary School staff members and our WCHE Tigers, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of our many volunteers. The week of April 18 is National Public School Volunteer Appreciation Week, and I want to take a moment to recognize and thank our many volunteers who make West Cypress Hills such a grand place to be.

When I think of all of the many ways our volunteers support our school, I am amazed at their dedication and their willingness to pitch in to help with whatever is needed. We very much appreciate our PTO, our homeroom parents, WatchDOGS, Literacy Partners, our LTHS PALS, the Library volunteers, volunteer lunch monitors....and the list goes on.

Thank you, thank you, for making such a huge difference in our lives. Our school would not be the same without you.

With warmest regards,

Melanie Beninga, Principal

Be sure to pick up your WCHE Learning Showcase passport in our lobby on Thursday, April 21! Our Learning Showcase starts at 4:30 and ends at 6:30 pm. The Learning Showcase passport lists all of the fun things to do. Each room offers a fun learning experience for the family. We'll have games and lots of fun adventures for the family to enjoy.

Use your passport to collect staff initials as you work your way through the Showcase. On your way home, stop by the Reception desk to claim a Passport Prize if your Passport has been initialed at least 10 times!

Extended Care Pick Up Moves to the Back Entrance for April 21 Only!

Our Tigers who remain after school in our LTISD Extended Care are usually picked up at main, front entrance. However, on Thursday, April 21, to avoid the Showcase traffic, Extended Care Pick Up will be moved to the back of the building.

Parents picking up students from Extended Care should use the back driveway in order to sign out students from Extended Care on Thursday, April 21. Signs will be posted to guide you.

After picking up your Tiger(s) from Extended Care, park in any of our parking lots and join the fun at the Showcase!

WCHE Names Coach Christy Mirizzi Teacher of the Year!

Big picture

Pictured above left to right are: LTISD Superintendent, Paul Norton; Stefani Allen, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction; Principal Melanie Beninga; Coach Christy Mirizzi, her daughter Anna, son Gio, and husband, Marc.

Coach Christy Mirizzi was voted by the West Cypress Hills Elementary staff as their Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Mirizzi is in her 22nd year of teaching, and half of those years have been with the Lake Travis Independent School District. This is Coach Mirizzi’s 8th year at West Cypress Hills. She is and has always been THE PE Coach at West Cypress. She helped to open the school in 2014, and she’s been an integral part of our faculty ever since.

Coach Mirizzi is the magician who orchestrates our annual Field Days, and she also creates other fun challenges for our Tigers throughout the school year to keep them healthy, physically fit, and having a great time while they are at it. She has even organized fitness challenges for the faculty! Thanks to Coach Mirizzi, many of us have dusted off our walking shoes, hit the pavement, and feel better for it!

Christy Mirizzi and her husband, Marc, live in Austin. They have a son and a daughter—both former Tigers—who now are proud Bee Cave Middle School Raiders. Even though being a wife, mother, and PE Coach keeps Coach Mirizzi pretty busy, she takes time to lead LTISD Enrichment Classes and volunteers to facilitate athletic events throughout the district.

As you can see, the West Cypress Hills Elementary staff had many excellent reasons to elect Mrs. Mirizzi as our Teacher of the Year. Congratulations, Coach! We are proud of you and your many accomplishments.

WCHE to Hold Lockdown Drill Monday, April 25

Dear West Cypress Hills Elementary School Parents and Guardians,

In 2019, Lake Travis ISD officials introduced the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to school safety. The SRP is a proven method of creating shared language and actions among students, staff, and first responders during a school emergency.

Our staff and students will take part in a lockdown drill on Monday, April 25, 2022. As a result, parents and students may see law enforcement officers, safety vehicles and/or other emergency responders onsite. Once the drill has been initiated, teachers will immediately suspend all instruction, and students will receive further directions from their teachers regarding the drill.

Once the drill has been completed, all instruction will resume as scheduled. The drill is scheduled to occur sometime in the morning and should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Our teachers and students have been advised of the drill and are prepared to participate. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and support during this time.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Please complete our Parent Input Form for 2022-2023 Tigers' Class Placements

In making class assignments, our goal is to place each child in a class where he or she can be most successful. A secondary goal is to also maintain a balance among classes in terms of gender, academic ability, disciplinary and social needs, learning styles, and individual needs of all of the students. All information shared on our input form is confidential and submitted electronically to West Cypress Hills Elementary administration.

We hope to make classroom assignments that will maximize the opportunity for your child’s success. If you have information you would like to have considered in your child’s placement, please complete and submit this form no later than May 1, 2022. Please limit your input to the way your child learns and any special needs that we should consider.

Staffing and staff assignments for next year have not been finalized; thus, we will not be able to honor requests for a specific teacher. We will do our best to honor your feedback.

Families are invited to read our book together at home during the March 28 through April 29 program.

Be on the Lookout for LTISD Bus Transportation Updates

One might think that our school bus drivers would be immune to anything and everything that could be thrown their way, BUT, from time to time, LTISD bus drivers do need to take a sick day, and at this time the District is not always able to provide a substitute bus driver quickly enough to cover the route.

As a result, there are times when SMARTTag and/or LTISD will notify parents that bus service could be delayed or that bus service for a particular route is canceled. Even though the disruption to service happens very infrequently, it's still an inconvenience when it happens to you and your Tiger(s.) We apologize.

Please be sure to pay close attention to SMARTTag and/or LTISD transportation alerts and updates so that you will know if/when disruption to your service has occurred.
