La Mesa Weekly Update

Hello La Mesa Families,
Por favor, desplácese hacia abajo para seleccionar español.
Parent Volunteers Welcome
If you find yourself with some free time from 8:00 am to 8:45 am, we want to invite you come out and be part of our morning Parent Patrol. Helping with traffic and being an extra set of eyes makes morning drop off run much more smoothly for everyone. On the mornings you are available, just by the office, sign in, and grab a beautiful orange vest to join us outside moving things along.
End of Semester School-wide reward
All students with no tardies and no negative office referrals will be invited to an assembly at the end of Semester 1 in December. Students who do not earn the first semester assembly will have a chance to earn it for second semester. Tardies to period 1 count.
We appreciate your ongoing support. Please let us know if there is any way we can further support your child.
Sincerely,
Michele Krantz
Principal

All students will need to get a ticket at the ASB window. Prices are $5 without an ASB card, and $0 with an ASB card. (That's right, if you purchased an ASB card, this event is free). Food trucks will be an additional cost.
If you wait until the day of the event, tickets will be $10 without, and $5 with an ASB card. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, September 4th at the ASB Window.

Lunch Money
Breakfast/Lunch Program
Does your student need assistance with getting lunch at La Mesa? Was he/she receiving free or reduced lunch last year at La Mesa or their elementary school? Please know that we want to ensure that every child is eating a healthy meal daily at our school site. We have resources available that can help, but it is important that you apply for your child now. Any student that was receiving free or reduced lunch last year here or at another school site must turn in a new free and reduced lunch application. At some point in September, all students that don't have a new application on file will be deleted from our school lunch system and will not receive any free/reduced lunch resources until a new application is submitted.
If you have not submitted a new application for this year or need help with a new application, please either have your child see our school health technician next week so they can pick up a form. You can access the form by clicking HERE.
Please return your completed form to the Health Office by September 14th. Forms must be turned into the health office ASAP so that we can send them off to the district and have them processed. This will ensure that your child will receive food on campus.
Please know this entire process is completely confidential and something that we want students who qualify to be sure they receive. Teachers, counselors, administrators and office staff are not privy to any student receiving free and reduced lunch. Just like all students buying lunch, a student receiving lunch services enter their ID number in our cafeteria and are provided food choices.
We hope you will access this resource if it is helpful to your family.
September is Attendance Awareness Month
We need your help this year to ensure that every student attends school every day, for every class, and arrives on time. September is Attendance Awareness Month nationwide, an opportune time to reflect on this vital priority.
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success, starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.
We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But we also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent— which means missing just two days a month over the course of an entire school year. Research shows:
- Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
- By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.
- By 9th grade, good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.
- Absences can add up quickly – and missing even one day of instruction means missing a lot.
WHAT PARENTS CAN DO:
- Help your child get into the habit and learn the value of regular routines.
- Teach your child that attending school is nonnegotiable unless they are truly sick.
- Build relationships with other families and discuss how you can help each other out (e.g., drop off or pick up children, babysit, translation assistance) in times of need or emergencies.
- Identify non-academic activities (drama, art, music, etc.) that can help motivate your child’s interest in school and learning and seek out schools that can offer those experiences.
