Mrs. Harris' Class News
January 20 - January 30
What We've Been Up TO
I seem to be a little late on sending our bi-monthly newsletter, and for that I apologize! We have continued to push forward in all areas of our instruction and time just never seems to slow down!
In math, students have begun learning about money. They've been counting it, adding it, and making change with it. Mrs. Trayer has also implemented a money system in her classroom where students can earn money for certain behaviors and can then "buy" something with it. The catch is they can also be fined for unnecessary behaviors! The class has pooled their money for a Popsicle party and will receive that today. How awesome!
In science we have finished up adaptations and are now moving into food chains. We will be discussing consumers, producers and decomposers, as well as identifying prey and predator relationships and thinking critically about what may happen in the even a prey is removed from the food chain. We will have our food chain quiz on Tuesday, January 27. Immediately following that, we will learn about habitats - both aquatic and terrestrial!
In reading this week, we are focusing on a "Shared Inquiry Discussion" using Martin Luther King Jr.'s, "I Have a Dream" speech. We are also working on identifying cause and effect relationships in nonfiction text. We will have a reading benchmark on Monday, January 26 and will then begin working on summarizing major points in nonfiction text.
In writing, we have been working on creating our four-square rough draft for our "How to Build a Gingerbread House." Due to our restricted writing time, this assignment will likely take a couple more weeks to complete. We will then switch our focus from expository writing to report writing when we research and write about animals!
