The Raid

  • John Brown was a very strongly influence abolitionist
  • He worked with the underground railroad
  • He led a group of 21 men to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
  • He reached the town on October 17th in the morning
  • He and his men captured civilians and the Federal Armory
  • He planned on arming slaves with weapons
  • His plans were spoiled within 36 of the raid
  • Robert E. Lee and his men came and captured brown and killed many of his men

Reasons led to the Civil War

  • Browns raid made it nearly impossible for the north and south to compromise
  • The raid was a crucial start of the war because it influenced many people to fight
